Cloud Engineer Job Description

The Cloud Engineer is a senior level administrator within ETS. This position focused on operating, maintaining and upgrading Manulife cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS) environment. Individual will be exposed to many aspects of cloud-specific infrastructure and systems.
These services will include projects within the following areas:

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs moderately complex systems and database administration. Monitors and tunes appropriate systems to ensure optimum level of performance.
  • Oversees appropriate level software installations and upgrades and related software packages.
  • Collects and reviews system data for capacity and planning purposes. Analyzes capacity data and develops capacity plans for appropriate level enterprise-wide systems. Coordinates with appropriate management personnel in implementing changes.
  • Supports the design and configuration of complex system landscapes.
  • Supports complex data/media recoverability through system backups and database archive operations. Plans, coordinates and directs appropriate level data refresh strategies.
  • Oversees, recommends and implements appropriate level database solutions and enhancements to ensure an improvement in system reliability and performance.
  • Oversees and applies appropriate support packages/patches to maintain system integrity.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate system documentation to ensure that documentation is current. Oversees the maintenance of a library of system-supporting process and procedure documentation.
  • Interacts with client management to answer questions, problems and requests regarding complex system issues.
  • Provides leadership and work guidance to less experienced personnel.

Essential Technical Skills:

  • Windows Server administration and related services (Active Directory, DNS, IIS, MSSQL), Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS),
  • Certificate Services
  • Networking experience and troubleshooting (TCP/IP, DNS, routing, switching, firewalls, LAN/WAN, DHCP)
  • Expertise with IPsec, VPN, Load Balancing, Iperf, MTR, RRAS, Routing Protocols, SSH, Network Monitoring / Troubleshooting tools
  • Remote Desktop Services
  • Experience with programming / scripting (Batch, VB, PowerShell)
  • Linux (RedHat) Build, Configure & Deploy
  • Cloud Backups
  • Cloud Monitoring
  • Comprehensive understanding of infrastructure technologies Server, network, storage, management technologies
  • Public cloud provider experience (AWS, Azure, Google)
  • Managed services experience creating, managing, and delivering
  • Experience with IT transformation data center consolidations and migration
  • Knowledge of service models (SOA)
  • ITIL (Operate within ITIL Problem, Incident and Change Management practices)
  • Understanding of the need for governance, risk, security, and compliance
  • Cloud (service) management skills
  • Exposure to security concepts / best practices
  • Experience with database administration
  • Exposure to Virtualization (Hyper-V, VMware, Xen)
  • Exposure to storage technologies (SAN, NAS, iSCSI, FC, RAID)

  • Demonstrate ability to explain complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience
  • Strong trouble-shooting skills across a broad and diverse population and environment
  • Demonstrate ability to proactively look for process improvement opportunities, challenge conventional practices, and adopt new methods and best practices. Also focused on continuous self-improvement.
  • Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with all levels of the organization, clearly and concisely present issues, alternatives, and recommendation(s)
  • Strong technical documentation skills, ability to clearly record key information within incident tracking and knowledge base systems
  • Ability to use incident tracking software
  • Appreciation of internal customer business, goals and objectives, strategies, and needs
  • Demonstrate ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, aggressive targets and deadlines.
  • Demonstrate understanding of priorities and effective work procedures, self-manage work time and prioritize multiple tasks and problems

Education and Certifications:

The successful candidate will hold:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Science / Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field
  • MCSD: Azure Solutions Architect in Developing Microsoft Azure Solutions (532) & Implementing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions (533)
  • Linux Certification Preferred
  • 8 years of successively more responsible experience as a system Administrator
