Role Overview

The ARINC GLOBAL Network (AGN) system is comprised of several private data centers and connects to the far reaches of the globe, in almost every country providing aviation, airport, government, and transportation connectivity. AGN provides private networking in a highly reliable, secure and available world-wide network architecture for Collins Aerospace IMS mission critical aviation, transportation, and airports customers.

The Network Solutions Architect will develop and deliver conceptual designs and technical architectures suited to a variety of product, customer and market needs. The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Systems Engineering and Architecture team responsible for leading and engaging in the architecture, evaluation and standardization of emerging network communication technologies, products and solutions in support of the ARINC Global Network. This role sets the current state and future direction of the technological landscape for the AGN. The candidate must be familiar with advanced networking concepts and technologies, including routing, switching, application centric and cloud based technologies. The role acts as the Subject Matter Expert for network technologies and will mentor and develop junior engineers.

The individual will be acknowledged as a thought leader within IMS Network Services and the broader Collins Aerospace business, credible and comfortable when engaging with executive leadership of both a technical and non-technical disposition. The candidate must be highly motivated, able to work in a collaborative team environment, as well as independently.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a senior technology adviser to major projects and programs, leading, and collaborating with, other members of the Collins Engineering team in the development of technical architecture proposals.
  • Capture, analyze and decompose high level business requirements into their constituent parts to create technical requirements for network systems, products and subsystems of high complexity and identify alternative technologies that could potentially be employed to address these product and market requirements.
  • Designing a target network architecture for the Collins IMS portfolio of products and services, provisioning network solutions architecture for multiple capital programs and service initiatives to meet business needs in a flexible and agile manner.
  • Devising technical product and technology road maps, depicting the steps anticipated to migrate from the current state to the targeted future state.
  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert for contemporary data network architectures and solutions which consolidate Voice and Data networks, using multiple technologies such as Software Defined Networking, Network Function Virtualization, VXLAN, Automation and Orchestration, Hybrid Clouds, Intent Based Networking, Segmentation, Internet of Things and Edge Intelligence.
  • Providing solution architectures for customer and market opportunities by engaging with the customer, generating technical proposals and solutions to their business problems, sharing and refining these with them in a collaborative fashion.
  • Participation in, and influencing of, Industry bodies and standards groups to align with Rockwell-Collins interests and proactively sharing the information and intelligence derived from these with both the Engineering team and the wider organization.
  • Making technology choices and proposals that consider the wider business context, risks, opportunities and constraints.
  • Deliver cost efficiencies by migrating the product portfolio over time towards a common target architecture where it makes sense to do so.
  • Develop and manage process for promoting the strategy and awareness of new/emerging technologies, whereby requests to diverge from the then current technical policies may be heard and adjudicated.
  • Partnering with Collins BU’s in the technical elaboration of proposed network product and technology investments so that initial estimates for inclusion in the capital budget planning process can be made.
  • Ensuring that design and development work undertaken by others within the Engineering team is aligned to the approved technical architecture for a given project/program.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Candidates for this role should possess a Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced degree and 5 years of prior relevant experience
  • Experience with designing large-scope network architectures to address customer-driven requirements in a complex, inter-networked system. Complex systems typically involved multiple servers, interfaces, networks, and databases.
  • Expert level knowledge of and proficiency in data network technologies such as OSPF, BGP, IGRP, EIGRP, VPC, HSRP/VRRP, MPLS, P2P VPN, VAN, Trunking, QoS.
  • Experience providing solutions and implementing infrastructures requiring 100% availability, near zero latency, low response times.
  • Hands-on systems level understanding and an ability to learn and apply new concepts and technologies quickly
  • Must be comfortable with presenting at customer-facing events and situations.
  • Possess an understanding of current industry trends and their advantages with ability to right fit into an existing environment
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and maintain a productive and committed work effort, meeting deadlines and managing workload.
  • Must be able to use independent judgment to make decisions in day-to-day job responsibilities the majority of the time, under general supervision.
  • Must possess superior communication skills with a demonstrated ability to articulate ideas in both business and technical terms (both verbal and written) according to the audience, securing and sustaining their buy-in.
  • Must be able to clearly depict and convey understanding of technical design and architecture using a wide range of design notations and artifacts, as applicable to the audience.
  • Up to 25% travel required to support a global product and solutions organization.

Desired Experience:

  • Active CCIE or equivalent advanced network certification highly preferred.
  • Experience as mentor eam lead providing work direction and guidance to other personnel.
  • Ability to take the initiative in driving technical discussions with the relevant parties and not wait to be invited.
  • Demonstrated technical thought-leadership to existing and prospective customers in the Air Transport Industry is desirable.
  • Ability to be perceived as an independent voice unaffiliated to any single Business Unit and/or Engineering location.
  • A career path that has provided exposure to and experience of employing a broad spectrum of network and infrastructure technologies.
