Who You'll Work With

Based in New York or Washington, D.C. and reporting to the Director of Risk, North America, you will work as part of McKinsey’s global Client Service Risk Team, which advises firm partners and the Client Service Risk Committee (CSRC). The CSRC is a committee of senior partners who counsel on how the firm can best serve its clients and publish its knowledge while mitigating and managing the risks involved. You will be part of McKinsey’s Risk function, whose mission is to enable McKinsey’s client impact and innovation, while managing risks to the firm, our clients, and our people. The Risk function is globally integrated team within the second line of defense of the firm risk model and is comprised of four pillars: 1) strategy & governance, 2) awareness & culture, 3) advice & support, and 4) compliance. This position fits within Client Service Risk (advice & support) and the compliance pillar, with a focus on the firm’s Healthcare Systems & Services (HSS) and Pharmaceuticals & Medical Products (PMP) practices.

What You'll Do

You will advise on risks relating to providing professional services, such as organizational and individual conflicts of interest, staffing conflicts, confidentiality, client selection, and reputation risk as well as ensuring compliance with relevant policies. You will work closely with client-serving partners and with other colleagues across the firm including our Communications and Legal teams. However, your role will not involve advice on financial, credit, or information technology risk or the like. By integrating and codifying advice from across firm functions, including Communications (on reach and relevance) and Legal (on legal and regulatory issues), you will provide risk counsel to colleagues and client service teams on client development, client engagement, and other client service activities.You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the HSS and PMP practices and the CSRC to lead problem-solving discussions in identifying key issues and assist client service teams and the CSRC in making risk decisions as well as maintain and evolve the cell risk compacts. You will also review, assess, and help manage risk management processes related to the HSS and PMP practices, and develop and implement recommendations to address any gaps.Additionally, you'll work closely with the HSS and PMP Risk Leads and Practice Managers to ensure risk compliance (vet new engagements, track and follow up on high-risk engagements, maintain key metrics, and prepare reports), as well as assist in building awareness of key risks through risk-management training materials and communications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree is a plus
  • Minimum of 7 years’ professional experience in communications, legal, consulting/ professional services, public policy, and/or public affairs, preferably relating to the health services and/or pharma industries
  • Top academic credentials, as well as demonstrable intellectual curiosity through professional training, advanced degree, or professional impact
  • An affinity and abiding interest for risk and governance issues
  • Distinctive project management skills demonstrated through executing on broad initiatives involving multiple stakeholders
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills – working on complex, sensitive, time-critical issues, quickly getting up to speed on unfamiliar topics
  • An entrepreneurial, collaborative attitude, with interest and aptitude for working as part of a global team, across countries and cultures
  • Strong personal presence and credibility, with the ability to work across all levels of seniority and geographies, cultivating trust-based, peer-counselor relationships
  • Highly resilient, with an action-oriented style; comfort and credibility in challenging discussions with senior colleagues, balancing robustness, persistence, flexibility, humility, tact, and calmness under pressure
  • Outstanding English written and oral communication skills, including clear and concise writing and editorial skills, with strong personal presence and credibility
  • Ability to work across all levels of seniority, cultivating trust-based, peer-counselor relationships
