The Clinical Operations and Business Analytics (COBA) team is part of the strategic initiative at DFCI to enable the transformation of data into insights and actionable information to the different operational, clinical, and business departments across the institute. The team has access to an extraordinary range of healthcare data including medical and pharmacy claims, enrollment, EMR (Epic), scheduling, billing, referral, and laboratory results. Using this data, the team supports reporting and analytics in areas such as patient care, quality and outcomes, operations, and healthcare administration.

The on-going expansion of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) signals an exciting time for both the institute and the COBA team. As the DFCI continues to grow, its need for data analytics tools and insights grows as well. In response to this this growth, and in order to deliver on the greater long-term vision for data analytics at DFCI, the COBA team is looking to expand its capacity. Through this strategic investment in analytics the COBA team will continue to empower its stakeholders via data and analytics addressing key clinical, operations, and business questions, all while building a long-lasting data analytics infrastructure across the institute.

As a result of Dana-Farber’s continued expansion, the COBA team is seeking to hire a Senior Business Analyst to join the Clinical business vertical to help contribute to the long-term vision of data analytics at DFCI. The Senior Business Analyst is tasked with empowering stakeholders and addressing key clinical, operational, and business inquiries through the generation of powerful tools and analytics. Simultaneously the Senior Business Analyst will be charged with building the enduring data analytics infrastructure necessary to provide this same support across the institute. Through partnerships with a variety of stakeholders, the Senior Business Analyst will drive the transformation of business questions into relevant inquiries into DFCI’s data assets, and translating the resulting data into insight and action. The Senior Business Analyst will be a key member of not just COBA, but a thought partner to clinical, operational, and business stakeholders to achieve institutional goals. The Senior Business Analyst will be expected to function independently within a fast-paced environment, work on several different projects/tasks concurrently, and serve as an advisor to both COBA teammates and external project teams as new projects and ad hoc requests are developed.

Responsibilities

The Senior Business Analyst- Clinical will work with a variety of tools (e.g. SQL, Excel, Tableau, etc.) to dive into the data, build interactive tools, and own the sources of truth necessary to meet the needs of institute. The Mission, Vision, and Core Values of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute are incorporated into all areas of practice.

  • Lead analytics projects from creation to completion using COBA Operating model and provide quantitative and qualitative analytic support to various departments that range from finance to clinical operations within DFCI.
  • Collaborate with COBA team members and DFCI stakeholders to prioritize and generate robust dashboards that address multiple needs and serve as the sources of truth on key business and patient care metrics.
  • Serve as the primary steward of stakeholder needs, translating high-level business, clinical, and operational questions into specific requirements that can be answered using DFCI’s data assets.
  • Develop interactive dashboards using modern BI tools that allow users to drill down to the data that matters most to them.
  • Prepare and present summaries of data for executive stakeholders looking to address DFCI’s most pressing and impactful needs.
  • Provide conceptual and technical support to end users, both through group trainings as well as one-on-one support.
  • Maintain open communication with COBA Leads and identify any concerns or problems which may hinder achievement of deadlines and or/ accomplishments of responsibilities.
  • Build and foster an institute-wide analytic community of practice by training and bringing together analysts, stewards, and analytics consumers.
  • Communicate and effectively manage relationships amongst a variety of stakeholders from different professional backgrounds.
  • Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Technical Skills:

  • Expert in business intelligence tools, specifically Tableau. Ideally also experienced in Microstrategy.
  • Advanced proficiency in Tableau Desktop to perform dashboard design, development, and production, and to develop process documentation to enable users to self-serve reporting, analytics, and visualization
  • Able to communicate with internal clients to develop and translate a business requirement into an effective and insightful interactive analytical dashboard
  • Can quickly and effectively diagnose and respond to support requests regarding data integrity, functionality, or other issues in existing and developing dashboards
  • Promotes and contribute to the overall strategy and vision of Tableau design and development practices at the institute
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio)
  • Fluency in SQL syntax and comfort manipulating and executing SQL queries.
  • Comfortable learning new software tools.

Qualitative Skills:

  • Ability to elicit and document business requirements from stakeholders, and to utilize requirements to design and develop analytics solutions.

  • Proven ability to document business requirements and to design, execute, and report on data validation methods.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be flexible in coordinating complex activities that are often subject to rapid or extensive changes and be able to prioritize urgent requests.
  • Ability to effectively lead meetings and trainings, both formal and informal, with departmental and clinical end users.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to effectively manage client and partner expectations.
  • Strong sense of balance and ethics, ability to consistently represent the interests and mission of the DFCI and act on behalf of its current and future patients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, information technology, mathematics, public health, or related domain. Master’s in Bioinformatics, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a comparable quantitative analytics domain preferred.
  • 3+ years of related work experience in a data analytics role within the healthcare industry.
  • Extensive experience designing, editing, and sharing business intelligence tools such as Tableau.
  • Fluency in SQL syntax and comfort manipulating and executing SQL queries.
  • A strong desire to explore, investigate, and uncover patterns in data while maintaining focus on pragmatic solutions.
  • Ability to function independently in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills and a history of effectively working and communicating with all levels of internal and external technical and non-technical staff.
