Job Description

The Role:

Tesla Manufacturing Engineers have the important role of designing “The Machine that builds the Machine”. We work with the cross-functional teams (Design, Quality, Production, Sustaining, and Supply Chain) throughout the entire lifecycle of a product (from initial design through prototype development and into full production) to develop high quality and efficient manufacturing equipment and processes that will produce the power electronics that drive our cars and energy products. Sometimes it also requires driving critical component development and qualification activities at suppliers. The goal: on time quantities of high quality component parts into Tesla’s production processes enabling extremely rapid development cycles and product launches.

Responsibilities:

Equipment Development and Implementation

  • Develop manufacturing equipment and fixtures to support early stage prototype builds
  • Work with equipment integrators and suppliers to design and manufacture equipment and fixtures for medium to high volume production
  • Manage suppliers during specification, design, buyoff and installation of manufacturing equipment
  • Characterize and validate new equipment and fixtures for introduction to the production floor

Process Development and Implementation

  • Develop new manufacturing processes
  • Determine layout of production workstations for product flow, ergonomics and efficiency
  • Perform process analysis, DOE, PFMEA, line balancing activities, and capacity modeling/simulation
  • Provide DFM (Design for Manufacturability) input to design team for process and yield improvements
  • Create detailed Manufacturing Instructions to train technicians and line operators on new processes and equipment

  • BS/MS Degree in Electrical / Mechanical / Industrial / Manufacturing Engineering or evidence of experience and exceptional ability.
  • 5+ years of component or assembly plant experience supporting Mechanical, Electrical or similar in a Project Management, or Manufacturing Engineering role.
  • Knowledge or Experience in Quality Systems a plus: PPAP/APQP processes.
  • Ability to communicate at the management level.
  • Ability to define and execute a project using project management techniques.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic environment. Excellent team building skills in dealing with suppliers, peers and other functional areas.
  • Strong technical writing ability and an ability to explain complex issues in a concise and plain manner.
  • Experience creating technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience introducing new products and new processes from a prototype environment to a production environment.
  • Experience designing production line layouts in AutoCAD.
  • Experience with medium and high volume manufacturing production lines.
  • Well organized with meticulous attention to detail.
  • High volume of travel on short notice may be required, up to 50%.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with ESD sensitive components
  • PCB and PCBA manufacturing process expertise
  • IPC specifications and requirements
  • Solidworks experience
