Job Description

* Please note, this role is only open to students currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD program and will graduate Winter 2020 or Spring/Summer 2021.

Research has been part of Airbnb from the beginning, ever since Paul Graham told the Airbnb founders, "go to your users." As designers, the founders embraced this advice and got on a plane to meet with Airbnb hosts that very weekend. Since those early days, the value of research has been baked into Airbnb’s product culture.

The Survey Science and Marketing Research Teams’ mission is to provide the robust, rich, and actionable research that the company needs, from foundational studies of travel behavior, to surveys understanding user/customer experience, to studies of research methodology. As an intern, you are paired with a more senior researcher and will learn from a large team who will be supporting you along the way. Working closely with your mentor, you participate in aspects of all our research work. You have the opportunity to apply survey and quantitative methods that you have experience with, but you’re also pushed out of your comfort zone and required to learn new methods and ways of working. You spend most of your time doing the everyday work of a researcher, but you may spend part of your time working on projects related to your research interests or for publication.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct practical and impactful research on our community of hosts and guests
  • Bring insights about users by using sophisticated and innovative methodologies, measurement strategies, survey experiments, and sampling methods.
  • Share findings with researchers, designers, engineers, product managers, and others, creating a smarter, more informed and more empathetic product team.
  • Participate in outreach to the company by teaching, telling stories, and creating experiences.

Experience

    • Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD in Survey Science/Methods, Marketing Research, Psychology, Political Science, Data Science, Applied Statistics, or related quantitative field
    • Solid understanding of basic statistics, modeling (SEM, multiple regression, cluster analysis, etc.), and experimental design
    • Deep experience with statistical analysis packages (R, Stata, SPSS, etc.)
    • Scrappiness, flexibility, and adaptability needed to do great research quickly

    A plus:
    • Experience with survey programming platforms (Confirmit, Qualtrics, etc.)
    • Experience in marketing research or researching supporting marketing teams

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly rate
  • Paid time off
  • Housing stipend
  • Daily breakfast, lunch and dinner
