The Materials and Manufacturing Technology team within BR&T is focused on discovering, developing, and transitioning innovative fabrication and assembly technologies into Boeing production operations. Our highly capable engineers excel in a team environment of challenge and opportunity on multiple projects, and partner with Boeing business units, government customers, global suppliers, and universities to rapidly mature key technologies to production readiness.
We are currently seeking a lead engineer to staff the Boeing Manufacturing Design Center (BMDC) at Georgia Tech, focused on non-traditional uses for robotics. The center houses BR&T professionals and projects on site at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The facility fosters continued development of innovations in manufacturing systems in collaboration with GT faculty and students from initial concept through pilot scale. The intention of the facility is to leverage GT talent while increasing the maturity and applicability of technology.that can transfer directly into to the Boeing Company. Georgia Tech is one of Boeing’s Strategic Universities with a strong faculty research history and a world class leader in manufacturing technology and processes. The BMDC facility offers opportunities to potentially foster additional external industry research collaboration with other companies (Delta, CAT, BMW, Cola-Cola, Delta, etc...).
The candidate will work on robotics/automation development projects for improving manufacturing systems, quality and in-service support of Boeing products.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Evaluating and developing equipment, process and software
  • Creating applications and simulations, and programming embedded computing systems and PLCs to support automation efforts
  • Gathering, documenting and maintaining requirements/procedures (e.g., equipment specifications, certification, training)
  • Coordinating with supplier management for purchase of equipment and service
  • Creating and managing project schedules in support of the overall team effort
  • Coordinating with Boeing stakeholders to transition technologies to the factory floor
  • Reporting results to the team and management

The successful candidate:

  • Will be highly a motivated self-starter who can apply engineering skills to current team projects, assist in developing and communicating the strategic value of our technologies to internal and external customers, and assist in the development of new technology opportunities.
  • Is expected to leverage industry and academic resources to accelerate technology maturation.
  • Will work in a dynamic research and development environment and must be comfortable interacting with team members and with other engineering and manufacturing disciplines outside the team.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor degree or higher in in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • Experience programming in C, C++, C#, Java or Python. T
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting CAD models
  • Experience with automation/robots including programming PLCs

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience using Robotic Operating Systems (ROS)
  • Experience with machine vision (eg. photogrammetry, laser scanning, structured light systems, etc.)
  • Linux based applications experience
  • Electrical power distribution in DC systems experience
  • Experience with electrical and mechanical engineering principles
  • Experience working in a research and development environment
  • Experience managing project schedules and budgets

Typical Education/Experience:

  • Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
