The ICE (Industrial, Commercial, and Enterprise) lab, which is part of ATPS (Advanced Technology and Platform Solutions), is an exciting and dynamic organization focused on developing technology for multiple internal partners that deliver winning products to the market place. The lab is pushing many technology vectors, including thermal inkjet print-head, LEP technology, ink and ink components, writing systems & system integration, large- and small-format media, and media primers. JOB DESCRIPTION

ICE R&D Writing Systems Engineers are responsible for enabling new product introductions and/or technology development according to the Technology Development Process or Product Development Process lifecycle per plan of record scope and schedule. As a Writing System Engineer, job responsibilities will include developing system solutions to enable proper ink/media interactions, printhead performance, and maximizing image quality (IQ), reliability, and/or durability through the optimal integration of a diverse set of system technologies obtained from development partners (ink, media, silicon/fluidics, firmware, hardware).

Expectations: Applies basic foundation of a function’s principles, theories and concepts to assignments of limited scope. Utilizes professional concepts and theoretical knowledge acquired through specialized training, education, or previous experience. Exercises independent judgment within defined parameters. Develops expertise and practical knowledge of applications within business environment. Acts as team member by providing information, analysis and recommendations in support of team efforts.

Specific examples for job description and responsibilities include:

  • Engage with senior writing system engineers in trouble-shooting for sub-system or system issues. Contribute to and participate in root cause analysis as required.
  • Support development, testing, and qualification of new materials for pigmented ink jet inks.
  • Support senior writing system engineers in evaluation sub-system (inks, pens, test-tools) and integration.
  • Provide logistical support for team (forecast, coordinating support activities, etc)
  • Execute testing as designed by senior writing system engineers
  • Own tests with established protocols, recognizes test deviations from expected behavior, troubleshoot and fix sources of deviations.
  • Documentation of findings and communication of work in appropriate forums.

Position may require interaction with HP internal and external partners. Travel to partner printer divisions, external suppliers, and off-shore HP sites may be required.

QUALIFICATION (Experience & Skills)

  • Education: BS mechanical, chemical, or materials engineering (or related engineering discipline), or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: zero to 2 years of experience performing system development testing, quality testing, or reliability testing in a fast-paced, industrial R&D environment.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills. Knowledge of statistics and statistical packages (MATLAB, JMP, Weibull++).
  • Understanding of thermal properties of materials, fluidics, electrical systems, software or scripting, control systems, and/or heat transfer.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills; mastery in English and local language.
  • Previous printer development experienced is highly preferred.

  • Exhibit solid planning, organizational and documentation skills.

COMMENTS

  • Position is located in San Diego
  • Job may require some traveling to other HP sites.
