De Thales Secure Communication and Information Systems (SIX)- vestiging in Huizen is met ca. 300 medewerkers actief op het gebied van communicatiesystemen, cybersecurity en transportsystemen. De Innovation, Research & Technology (IRT) groep ondersteunt de lokale productlijnen met het onderzoeken en toepasbaar maken van nieuwe innovaties in nationale en internationale onderzoeksprojecten. Een wisselende groep van onderzoeksstaf, R&D engineers, onderzoekers van andere Thales vestigingen en studenten draagt actief bij aan deze projecten.

Information about the department:

With approximately 300 employees, the Thales Secure Communication and Information Systems (SIX) branch in Huizen is active in the field of communication systems, cyber security and transport systems. The Innovation, Research & Technology (IRT) group supports the local product lines with research and risk reduction for new innovations often in the context of national and international research projects. A changing group of research staff, R&D engineers, researchers from other Thales locations and students actively contributes to these projects.

About the assignment

Omschrijving van de opdracht

Software gedefinieerde netwerken (SDN's) staan voor een andere manier om tegen ICT-netwerken aan te kijken dan het geval is bij traditionele IP- netwerken. SDN brengt een scheiding aan tussen het besturings- en het datagedeelte van het netwerk (bijvoorbeeld in routers en switches). In een SDN wordt het besturingsgedeelte van een netwerk ondergebracht in een server die switches op afstand bestuurt. SDN zorgt ervoor dat gebruikers hun netwerken volledig naar eigen inzicht kunnen inrichten en beheren. Doel van de opdracht is tweeledig: (1) onderzoek doen naar SDN en meedenken over een visie rondom toepassingen van SDN in een militair tactische omgeving, het gaat hierbij met name om architecturen voor een robuuste oplossing, en (2) het ontwikkelen van een demonstrator van een robuuste SDN – oplossing passend bij de huidige SIX NL productfamilie, gebruikmakend van open source frameworks (zoals b.v. OpenFlow).

De opdracht is geschikt als stage en afstudeeropdracht. De reikwijdte van de opdracht kan overeenkomstig worden aangepast.

Description of the assignment

Software-defined networks (SDNs) represent a different way of looking at IT networks than traditional IP networking. SDN creates a separation between the control and the data part of the network (for example in routers and switches). In an SDN, the control part of a network is located in a server that controls switches remotely. SDN ensures that users can set up and manage their networks entirely at their own discretion. The aim of the assignment is two-fold: (1) conducting research on SDN and developing about a vision on applications of SDN in a military tactical environment, in particular architectures for a robust solution, and (2) developing a demonstrator of a robust SDN solution that fits the current SIX NL product family, using open source frameworks (such as OpenFlow, for example).

The assignment is suitable as an internship and graduation assignment. The scope of the assignment can be adjusted accordingly.
