About the Job

This position will be responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining an operating model to enable the migration of existing technology solutions and deployment of new services to a cloud computing platform.

This includes but is not limited to automating and streamlining processes, implementing and maintaining deployment tools and monitoring operational availability.

The position will also help troubleshoot and resolve issues in development, test and production environments, act as an escalation point for application support and work collaboratively with software engineering teams to deploy and operate our systems.

Scope could include technical lead responsibilities, regional and functional influence and collaboration on global initiatives.

Expectation to support 24/7/365 on-call operations. The job role is based in the Hellaby UK office but you may also be required to work from other Pearson UK offices and travel to other locations where needed.

Qualifications

Things We Expect You to Know:

  • Extensive knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Strong hands-on experience of cloud-related technologies, specifically AWS but will consider other providers (Google, Azure etc...).
  • Configuration tooling experience, using automated deployment tools to build infrastructure and deploy applications.
  • A deep understanding of distributed system design and dependency management.
  • A strong grasp of monitoring tools, approach and implementation.
  • Experience in containerisation & serverless applications.
  • Solid working experience of continuous integration practices & tools (Jenkins, Travis CI etc...).
  • Understanding Production Infrastructure environments, including the underlying technologies.
  • Understanding of SDLC in Agile environments.
  • An established history of working with agile teams.
  • Expertise in deployment, troubleshooting, design, architecture and technical areas for application solutions.
  • Design and implementation of fault tolerant and secure infrastructure, inline with best practices.
  • Security & deployment processes to deliver effective IT security & compliance.
  • How to collaborate with a globally distributed team of engineers.
  • Deployments to a cloud environment
  • Experience with mentoring and knowledge transfer to BAU support teams

Required technology experience:

  • AWS certification.
  • Powershell & Chef scripting.
  • Windows & Linux experience.
  • T-SQL scripting.
  • Firewall, Network & Load-Balancing knowledge.
  • Source control.
  • IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.
  • Cloud Compute Accounting
  • Release Management Tools
  • System metrics gathering for improvements
  • CI/CD components and process design
  • Experience of working with or contributing directly to Open Source projects.
  • Understanding and experience of leading / managing technology products.
  • Experience of working with failure based testing, for example Simian Army.
  • Delivering web-scale products to a global market at high release velocity.
  • Experience working in a test-driven development environment.
  • Supporting Jenkins.
  • Experience working with Docker.
  • Terraform scripting.
