We are looking for a Lead Editor for our San Francisco Market to be the face of Eater SF to media, PR and the industry at large. In this role you will manager Eater SF’s Senior Editor and Reporter and provide strategic planning and oversight over all of Eater SF. You’ll be the holder of the quality bar to ensure all content is in line with Eater’s journalistic standards.
What you'll do:
- Devise and oversee execution against short term and long term edit strategy
- Oversee and strategize about the reporting, writing, and pitching of breaking news stories, reblogs, openings, and closings in SF
- Assign and manage a schedule of longform reporting
- Responsible for strategic planning and oversight of service oriented content, including maps and guides
- Manage Eater SF’s senior editor and reporter
- Understand the nuances of each Eater SF team member's role and strengths/weaknesses in order to motivate each towards the greater good of the site
- Conduct monthly 1:1 meetings with team members, including tracking individual wins and setting both individual and team-wide goals
- Conduct Eater SF team meetings, at least monthly, to set mutual goals, align the team members' diverse workflows, brainstorm, and align on big editorial swings for the site
- Grow and refine the Eater SF freelance base to help achieve desired results
- Assign photographers for stories in a timely manner as needed
- Lead ESF contributors and editors to greatness in news, larger narratives, and roundups
- Track openings and keep in touch with chefs, restaurateurs, and relevant spokespeople for coverage as needed; assign this coverage and reporting out as needed
- Make connections with local restaurant PR, chefs, restaurateurs, and other staff to generate news leads and scoops
- Ensure Eater SF is breaking restaurant news and reblogging high level restaurant news in a timely manner in line with Eater’s brand standard to be a “one stop shop” for city news and happenings
- Edit and/or write medium-length reports up to 1,000 words investigating a pertinent topic or issue occurring in the restaurant scene
- Edit and write restaurant maps and roundups
- Write news and features when appropriate
- Work with Engagement Editor to strategize about Eater SF social media platforms and oversee the growth of Eater SF's Instagram account.
- Delegate and manage social media activity across direct reports.
What you'll bring:
- Three years experience in journalism, particularly with experience covering a beat, developing sources, and breaking news
- Comfort with cold calling and fast pace of digital publishing
- A drive to beat the competition
- A drive to continue Eater's reputation as the number one source for news about the restaurant world
- Attention for detail, news judgement, story packaging, and careful eye for accuracy
- Interest in digital headline writing, analytics, and social media publishing
- Management experience
- Experience covering business, real estate, and/or legal matters
- A love for restaurants and knowledge of the SF scene
- Experience with photography is a plus
