Job Description

We are seeking a product designer with a passion for understanding user needs, an eye for detail, and the enthusiasm to apply their skills and contribute to our fast growing team. As a Product Designer, you will advocate for users in every aspect of the product development process to deliver an experience that allows them to intuitively create and share charts and dashboards of their data stored in MongoDB.

You will work alongside the dedicated design, engineering, product management teams to deliver MongoDB Charts, our data visualisation product that works natively within our database-as-a-service ecosystem. We are located in our Sydney office in Haymarket and work closely with teams based in New York. You will also collaborate with the larger Design team based in New York.

The ideal candidate for this role will have

  • A bachelor’s degree in interaction design or 3-5 years’ relevant professional experience
  • A strong portfolio of product designs that have shipped and demonstrate thoughtful solutions to clearly defined user problems
  • A primary skillset demonstrating strong user experience and research methodologies, balanced with an understanding of design principles, typography, visual hierarchy/layout
  • A proven track record designing, prototyping, testing, shipping, and evaluating user experiences for web based applications
  • The ability to think at a high level about product strategy and vision, before thinking “how should it look” you think “what should we build” and “why should we build it”
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to clearly articulate your design decisions
  • Experienced with common design tools like Sketch, InVision, UserTesting.com (or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with using design systems in their work
  • Curiosity, a positive attitude, and a drive to always learn something new
  • Experience with data visualisation design a plus

Position Expectations

  • Become an integral part of our Sydney product development team
  • Develop a deep understanding of users through ongoing research and analysis of user behavior patterns
  • Leverage existing design components and document new ones where needed
  • Give and solicit feedback from other designers to continually raise our bar for quality
  • Collaborate with engineering and product management teams in an agile environment
  • Contribute to high-level strategic decisions with the rest of the product team and other stakeholders
  • Facilitate effective design workshops with multiple stakeholders
  • Embrace an active role with design team peers in New York with availability to travel to US on occasion (approx. once or twice a year)

Success Measures

Within the first three months, you will have

  • gone through our new hire training
  • familiarised yourself with our product strategy, high impact user scenarios, and existing roadmap
  • have participated in usability or value assessment of a feature design
  • participated in design reviews

Within six months, you will have

  • designed, validated (read: well-researched and tested), and shipped a feature
  • actively participated in our quarterly planning
  • established clear and thorough communication with other team members and stakeholders on project status, results from research and testing, and rationale behind design decisions
  • beaten at least one team member in ping pong or pool

Within 12 months, you will have

  • delivered a major release of MongoDB Charts
  • have attended one of our MongoDB conferences to discuss our latest features with customers and listen to their feedback
  • turned that feedback into actionable user stories
  • participated in Skunkworks, our internal hackathon where all MongoDB engineers and designers work in small teams on projects they are passionate about
