About the role

As an Art Director, you’ll lead design production by providing direction to internal and external partners to ensure its quality and timeline meet our expectation.

This is a Manager level position which will report directly into the Director of Brand Design Nike Japan.

This role will require some travel to Nike Headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

Responsibilities:

1.Manages employees and sets individual goals that link to departmental priorities. Coaches staff, supports development, makes hiring decisions, and drives performance management, recognition and rewards.

2.Project Management - Leads the process to ensure the accuracy, relevance, and timely delivery of brand collateral. Manages the workflow for all projects and develop the work back process calendar. Coordinates the distribution of projects with the design team and ensures consistency of design and format for projects. Establishes the design tone for all projects and provides feedback and development for creative and layout work.

3.Production Management - Directs, influences and manages the production of brand projects under strict timelines of delivery. Works with vendors to source cost-effective materials and processes. Conducts on- site press checks as necessary and provides final Nike authorization. Negotiates project costs per fiscal year budget. Evaluates and authorizes vendor invoices. Responsible for completing projects on schedule and within budget.

4.Project Development - Designs and produces publications for use in communicating key brand strategies. Examples include monthly and seasonal merchandising directives, key initiative guides, display direction and training guides for both direct and indirect retail. Responsible for design inspiration, formatting, illustration of product walls, scanning, color correcting and manipulating photos.

5. Future Planning and influence - Maintains knowledge of current Nike design trends, color, and sports-related products through research. Influences the future direction of publications and projects utilizing up-to-date design trend knowledge in order to maintain the leading edge of designed communications. Team Management: Manage and develop direct reports by establishing clear expectations and goals to meet accountabilities. Consistently evaluate performance and provide feedback. Manage the Performance Management process for the team.

Requirements:

1. 5 plus years of progressively technically sophisticated design experience.

2.Proven ability to apply and perform design skills, including drawing/sketching, typography, ideation, color theory, use of texture, spacing, and scale, visual presentation development and layout that is supported by a portfolio of non-computer-based creative art and design.

3.Knowledge of and sensitivity to trends influencing design in general, and the athletic industry specifically.

4. Demonstrated high level of expertise using design software.

5. Proven ability to work in a rapidly changing, high-growth environment.

6.Ability to manage multiple and competing work priorities, demands, and changes.

7.Strong oral and written communications skills in both Japanese and English, including meeting facilitation and presentations. (Minimum TOEIC 800+)
