About Uber Elevate

Uber Elevate is working toward transforming the world through aerial ridesharing at scale:

on-demand aviation has the potential to radically improve urban mobility, giving people back time lost in their daily commutes. Just as skyscrapers allowed cities to use limited land more efficiently, urban air transportation will use three-dimensional airspace to alleviate transportation congestion on the ground. A network of small, electric aircraft that take off and land vertically (called VTOL aircraft for Vertical Take-off and Landing, and pronounced vee-tol), will enable rapid, reliable transportation between suburbs and cities and, ultimately, within cities. Planned for 2023, UberAir will allow riders to tap a button and get a flight in three partner cities including Dallas and Los Angeles.

About the role

Uber Elevate's Advanced Technologies Center (ATCP) is focused on advancing the state of knowledge in digital sciences, and developing advanced technologies that can help make cities smarter, better, and more efficient places to live and work. Based in Paris, France, The center brings together scientists and engineers working on many exciting topics that impact Elevate's vision of future air transport, including artificial intelligence (e.g. machine learning and optimization), airspace management, sensing & perception, autonomous control, energy management and communication networks.

ATCP scientists and engineers have the opportunity to directly impact the development of innovative transportation in cities, with a huge positive effect on people's lives. Research is conducted in an open environment, with results published in scientific journals and conferences, open-source software platforms, and collaborations with the best universities and researchers worldwide. The center started in 2019 and the team is growing fast, allowing each member to participate in shaping this exciting adventure.

We are looking for experienced researchers who are willing to both advance the state of the art in their scientific domain of expertise, and assist in the development of advanced technologies to build transportation systems of the future. Research scientists are expected to conduct frontier research, collaborate with the best research partners worldwide, advise junior researchers and students. They draw inspiration from the issues of urban air transportation and autonomous aircraft systems, and advise on the related technology developments

What you'll do

• Perform state-of-the-art research: Design, implement, train and optimize innovative algorithms that advance the state of knowledge in machine learning and optimization, inspired by the practical applications in air transport (for instance, optimizing trajectories, detecting singular situations, combining specific constraints, etc.).
• In collaboration with the engineering support team at ATCP, supervise the implementation of test cases using real-life data in the field of urban aviation and aerial ride-share.
• Develop research collaborations, hire and advise junior researchers and students.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with research and engineering teams at Uber Elevate and communicate your work to colleagues and management
• Submit publications or patents, to top machine learning, O.R. or optimization journals and conferences

What You’ll Need

Minimum of 6 years of experience with research in one of the specific domains of Machine learning, Operations research, or Optimization.

Competencies

• Statistics and applied mathematics (REQUIRED) : problem modeling, data analysis and machine learning.
• Coding (REQUIRED) : The candidate will develop proof-of-concept and prototype code to establish the relevance and performance of their ideas. Support from ATCP engineers will allow this code to leverage research platforms and data access mechanisms so that the candidate can focus on their particular algorithms.
• Collaboration (REQUIRED) : Important competence since research is performed in a network: externally, in order to develop and maintain an up to date knowledge of the field; internally to ATCP in order to pursue group projects, and advise early-stage researchers; and with the Elevate teams in California to discuss future technological roadmaps.
• Execution and Results (REQUIRED) : regular publication of research results is expected.
