Director, System Safety Process Assurance

About the Role

As a member of the senior staff at Uber ATG, you will add strong technical expertise and visionary leadership to the Self-Driving Vehicle (SDV) Safety team. Reporting to the Director of SDV Safety Standards, you will lead the development, standardization, and implementation of improved processes within Uber ATG to document our engineering approach to assuring safety and establish compliance with existing and emerging industry best practices and regulatory requirements.

• Lead efforts to ensure confidence in the availability and quality of documented evidence which supports the safety assurance and validation of the company’s technology
• Work across multiple internal teams to review existing methods in use, develop roadmaps toward a state-of-the-art future, and manage cross-functional efforts to deliver solutions
• E.g., working with the simulation and test operations teams, establish ongoing, quantifiable correlation of simulation test results to real-world safety with proper reflection of scope and limitations
• E.g., enhance our approach to data analytics so that hardware, software, and system safety issues in the field can be captured and addressed
• Support our adherence to existing industry best practices and associated regulatory requirements
• Attend and provide input to industry bodies such as ISO, SAE, etc as well as governmental bodies such as US DOT (and its operating administrations) and UN ECE Working Groups
• Work closely with Uber Policy and Legal teams as needed to interpret and comment on federal public documents.
• Exemplify and uphold the company’s safety culture and values without fail

• Demonstrated skill at long-range thinking for both technical solutions and business decisions
• Excellent Interpersonal skills and ability to establish trust and effective working relationships with others on an external and internal basis

The System Safety team within Uber ATG is charged with ensuring that, at every stage of development, our self-driving vehicles are demonstrably safe when operating on public roads. We also hold primary responsibility for establishing durable specifications that will guide the integration of self-driving technology onto the Uber network at global scale.

Our safety experts apply analytical skills and expertise throughout the product development lifecycle. We work with software engineers, hardware engineers, test teams, and external partners to efficiently deliver the appropriate level of assurance for on-road, highly automated systems.
