Job Description

At Lyft, community is what we are and it’s what we do. It’s what makes us different. To create the best ride for all, we start in our own community by creating an open, inclusive, and diverse organization where all team members are recognized for what they bring.

From day one, Lyft’s mission has been to improve people’s lives with the world’s best transportation. And self-driving cars are critical to that mission: they can make our streets safer, cities greener, and traffic a thing of the past. That’s why we started Level 5, our self-driving division, where we’re building a self-driving system to operate on the Lyft network.

Level 5 is looking for doers and creative problem solvers to join us in developing the leading self-driving system for ridesharing. Our team members come from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, and each has the opportunity to have an outsized influence on the future of our technology. Our world-class software and hardware experts work in brand new garages and labs in Palo Alto, California, and offices in London, England and Munich, Germany. And we’re moving at an incredible pace: we’re currently servicing employee rides in our test vehicles on the Lyft app. Learn more at lyft.com/level5 .

Autonomous Infrastructure team is responsible for creating and maintaining the foundational systems that engineers rely on in order to make autonomous driving a reality. We build standardized and flexible infrastructure that enables software developers move and innovate fast. As an Engineering Manager of the Build team, you will be responsible for building and operating a distributed, polyglot, cloud scale build farm for all of the software that powers Lyft autonomous cars. Everyday we compile millions of lines of code across dozens of programming languages. We continuously deliver many hundreds of build artifacts. We deploy multitude of services to cloud and to data centers on wheels (cars!). For every mile we drive in the real world, we drive a hundred in simulation. We execute test after test using virtual and physical hardware. At Lyft, we settle for nothing less than amazing development experience. If you are excited to help this mission, we should talk!

Responsibilities:

  • Hire and lead the team of talented engineers who are motivated by Autonomous space and love being a force multiplier in the large and distributed organization.
  • Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of your team members. Help develop their careers, by arranging the projects tailored to their skill levels, personalities, work styles, and professional goals.
  • Support Autonomous organization in their build, release, deployment, and continuous integration needs.
  • Help your team to build relationships across the whole Autonomous organization and Lyft at large.
  • Build teams that are collaborative, inclusive, and respectful of each other.
  • Work with your team to maintain and execute on a prioritized long term team roadmap

Experience & Skills:

  • You have a technical background and are able to contribute to planning and design discussions. That usually comes with Bachelors in CS, but doesn’t have to be.
  • You have 5+ years of relevant professional experience, with 2+ years in people management. You are still hands on, yet clearly chosen management as a career path.
  • You can motivate team, earn their respect, and instill a strong sense of ownership.
  • You can empathise with pain points of engineers across org, and have a great barometer for impact.
  • You are familiar with build toolchains (e.g. Bazel), compilers (e.g. gcc, clang, Rust, Java/Scala, and Golang), dynamic programming languages (e.g. Python), version control systems (e.g. Git), and continuous integration systems (e.g. Travis, Jenkins).
  • You thrive during time of uncertainty, and enjoy bringing order and structure into unstructured world

Nice to Have :

  • Exposure to backend cloud infrastructure at scale (e.g. AWS, GCP).
  • Exposure to project utilizing CUDA, Tensorflow, OpenCV, and similar technologies.
