What is the hidden job market?

Traditionally, the hidden job market is considered jobs never posted online. Jobs that come from networking. For this post, we include 150+ networking groups to find those kinds of roles. But we also share jobs you won’t find on the big boards: roles posted only on a company’s own site. This is because we have evidence that applying direct on the company website increases interview rates.

263 companies that don't post on LinkedIn

We checked more than 1,800 employers against LinkedIn Jobs. 263 passed. Of 107 well-known employers we checked, 98 posted on LinkedIn, so the ones that don't are mostly small and specialized: open source software firms, small agencies, nonprofits, co-ops, credit unions, rural utilities, family businesses and schools. Fewer people find them, so fewer people apply.

A few examples: Linear, Zed Industries and Fly.io in software; MetaLab and Penpot in design; Epoch AI and Our World in Data in research; Tanner Electric and Kit Carson Electric in the trades; Hospice of the Northwest in healthcare. 71 had remote roles open when we checked, and 25 more are remote teams that take open applications.

Below is every company, sorted by field. Each name links straight to its careers page. You can also filter the full list in the Google Sheet.

How to use the hidden job market

  1. Pick 10 to 20 employers a week whose work fits the job you want.
  2. Tailor your resume to each job description. In Huntr data (1.7M+ applications), tailored resumes get about 2x the interview rate.
  3. Go straight to the careers page. 'Open application' means no roles are listed today, but they take applications. Send one anyway.
  4. Try the search tricks above to find jobs posted only on a company's hiring system.
  5. Join one or two communities in your field and give before you ask.
  6. Track every application in one place so nothing slips.
