🖋️ Advanced Font Customization, ⚙️ Flexible Custom Sections and 📄 DocX Export

A key goal for a modern job seeker building a resume is balancing creativity with safety. You want to stand out from the pile, but you are terrified that a unique design will break the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and land your resume in the rejection pile. In this update, we are solving that dilemma. We are introducing three major features designed to give you total control over your resume’s story and style; without ever compromising its technical readability. Here is what’s new.

🖋️Advanced Font Customization - That Actually Plays Nice with ATS

We’ve all heard the advice: "Stick to Times New Roman or Arial". While safe, standard system fonts can feel outdated or low-effort. We wanted to give you the ability to look like a modern professional without confusing the hiring bots. We are introducing Font Customizations, a new engine giving you granular control over your typography while maintaining strict ATS compatibility.

The "Safety First" Guarantee

We didn't just pick random pretty fonts. We selected 13 specific open-source fonts (like Inter, Roboto, and Merriweather) and optimized them for two things:

  1. OCR Readability: Ensuring the visual glyphs are clear enough for a machine (...and recruiter) to read.
  2. CMAP Embedding: We automatically embed the a font character map in our PDFs, so the ATS has no issue extracting the text from your resume export.

We use open-source fonts (mostly from Google Fonts) to avoid the licensing restrictions of proprietary fonts like Helvetica, Calibri and Arial. We selected these fonts specifically because they are visual twins to the standard fonts recruiters are used to.

Granular Control

You can now mix and match fonts to create a visual hierarchy using our three new categories:

  • Display: Make a strong impression with your Name (the largest text on the page).
  • Heading: distinct styles for section headers like "Experience."
  • Text: Clean, highly readable Sans Serif options for your body content.

Font Packs

Don't have an eye for design? We also launched Font Packs; curated pairings of fonts that we know look great together. Just click one button to apply a professional theme across your document.

⚙️ Custom Sections: For Non-Linear Careers

Many modern careers are "squiggly." You have side hustles, publications, speaking engagements, and passion projects. Until now, resume builders forced you to shoehorn these unique achievements into "Work Experience" or generic text boxes. Our new Custom Sections feature allows you to build a dedicated home for every aspect of your identity.

Tailor Your Density (Inline vs. Stacked)

You now have "Layout Agility." You can choose how to display your custom data based on how much page real estate you have left:

Smart Parsing

This isn't just for new resumes. If you import an existing resume, our engine will automatically detect non-standard sections (like "Volunteering" or "Patents") and tag them as Custom Sections for you. No re-typing required.

📄 DocX Export: Total Content Ownership

While our PDF export is the standard for maintaining a pixel-perfect design, we know that sometimes you need an editable file. Whether a recruiter specifically requests a Word doc, or you just want to make last-minute tweaks in a familiar environment, we have you covered. You can now export your resume as a .docx file directly from the download menu.

The "Clean Slate" Approach

It is important to note: The DocX export focuses on content, not design. When you export to Word, we strip away the complex PDF styling to give you a "vanilla," distraction-free document with standard 0.5" margins and system fonts (like Arial or Aptos). This ensures the file opens flawlessly on any computer, Mac or PC, giving you a stable foundation to edit, format, or submit exactly as you see fit. Use our AI tools to perfect your content, and the DocX export to take that content anywhere.
