Job Description

About the role

The Natural History Museum has recently received funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Digital Accelerator for Arts and Culture, which supports arts organisations through strategic improvements to technology infrastructure. This funding will help us scale up our mass digitisation capabilities in preparation for DiSSCo UK, a £155 million, 10-year programme to digitise natural science collections held in the UK.

We are seeking a Digitiser to support our curatorial teams in preparing for mass digitisation, and to digitise specimens in our entomological and herbarium collections. As a Digitiser you will work directly with the rest of our Digitisation Team, curatorial teams, and Data Management Team to capture digital images of specimens and their associated data. You will represent the museum in tours and official events. You will get the opportunity to present your work through the creation of digitisation content for social media and articles including blogs, datasets, reports and publications.

This role sits within the Digital, Data and Informatics (DDI) group within our Science Directorate. DDI is responsible for the museum’s mass digitisation, collections data management, scientific AI applications, and the delivery of DiSSCo UK. You will report to the Digitisation Team Lead and work closely with the team’s Senior Digitisers.

About you

  1. Demonstrable experience in the field of natural sciences, or a related discipline.
  2. Demonstrable experience of collections digitisation, recuration or conservation projects (or relevant transferable experience).
  3. Good working knowledge of collections metadata and collection management systems (or relevant transferable experience).
  4. Good working knowledge of working in the cloud with either Office 365 or Google Docs suite.
  5. Experience and/or knowledge of checking and verifying data either in documents, spreadsheets, databases, scientific literature or other sources.
  6. Ability to work as part of a team.
  7. Demonstrable manual dexterity for handling small and fragile collections objects.
  8. Demonstrable attention to detail and ability to follow complex instructions/workflows
