Responsible for independently evaluating, selecting and applying standardized scientific procedures and techniques; contributes to the planning, design, execution and interpretation of experiments; makes detailed observations, records data and assists in preparation of reports, papers presentations, and new proposals; presents results/papers at technical meetings; may participate in the guidance/mentoring of junior staff.

General Summary:

Responsible for providing technical expertise in the clinical research lab in processing and analyzing complex biological human samples ( i.e. urine, blood, sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid) using ELISA based immunoassays and other biochemical tests. This position works collaboratively to process biological samples for metabolomics analysis and with the research team on study design, implementation and reporting of research findings. The overarching goal of our work is to better understand the mechanisms underlying the development of lung disease in cystic fibrosis.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Collects, evaluates and processes human biological samples for further analysis according to standard operating procedures.
  2. Stores and maintains a biobank of human biological specimens with associated clinical data in an electronic database.
  3. Works collaboratively with other investigators (local and national) to ship and receive biological samples as needed for research projects.
  4. Prepares solutions and reagents following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  5. Responsible for purchasing equipment, chemicals and lab supplies.
  6. Performs and analyzes complex procedures using ELISA based immunoassays and other biochemical tests.
  7. Processes complex biological samples and assists with metabolomics analysis.
  8. Participates in ongoing study design, implementation and statistical evaluation of studies as well as collaboration on reports of research findings.
  9. Creates, maintains and organizes all necessary general record keeping.
  10. Creates and performs computer querying of databases.
  11. Maintains laboratory equipment and troubleshoots instrument problems.
  12. Prepares posters for conference presentations.
  13. Participates in manuscript generation and review for publication.
  14. Maintains chemical inventories and safely disposing of biochemical waste.

Other job functions as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  2. A minimum of three years of related experience in laboratory research is required. Experience in microbiology and microbiota analysis preferred.
  3. Knowledge of and understanding of basic biological principles.
  4. Able to develop hypothesis-driven research questions.
  5. Familiarity with a range of relevant research methodologies.
  6. Independently designs, executes, and analyzes scientific experiments.
  7. Excellent problem solving and trouble-shooting skills, and good organizational and record keeping skills.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively, works independently and under supervision, and function as a research team member.
  9. Strong computer proficiency in Microsoft Suite.

Requirements

Required Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering or scientific discipline; may require a Master’s Degree for certain lab specialties
- Minimum to two (2) year’s experience in a related area/laboratory setting.

- Master’s Degree in applicable field/research specialty highly preferred
- Significant experience conducting research in area of specialization
- Some experience with laboratory management

Min to Max Hourly Salary

Min: USD $29.48/Hr. Max: USD $44.23/Hr.

Min to Max Annual Salary

Min Salary: USD $61,318.40/Yr. Max Salary: USD $91,998.40/Yr.

Salary Information

This compensation range was calculated based on full-time employment (2080 hours worked per calendar year). Offers are determined by multiple factors including equity, skills, experience, and expertise, and may vary within the range provided.

Seattle Children’s offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
