ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Senior Software Engineer in the Product and Technology Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY/Remote*.

The ACLU’s Product & Technology team partners with departments across the ACLU to build and maintain innovative, robust and secure digital products and technical systems that accelerate the ACLU’s mission as our nationwide guardian of rights and liberties. We are a team of engineers, designers, product managers and administrators who take pride in creating technical solutions that help raise money, get our message out to the world, mobilize our supporters, and manage our data with integrity.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, Data, the Senior Software Engineer will join our Data Pod, which focuses on building and maintaining accessible, accurate, and actionable systems that manage constituency data for robust internal use. This role will work collaboratively with a multi-functional team of peers and stakeholders to build, optimize, and maintain a centralized data management platform that supports a growing constituent database and a variety of advocacy, outreach, and fundraising initiatives. The ideal candidate is a senior-level software or data engineer with significant experience working on large-scale, high-volume data pipeline and storage solutions with complex data requirements. The person in this role will join the Product & Technology Department of the ACLU National Office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, deploy, and maintain a core data management solution that includes multi-sourced data pipelines, ETL routines, and a central data warehouse
  • Work within a cross-functional team of engineers and product management to understand business objectives and refine complex feature requirements
  • Propose solutions and make implementation decisions that are appropriate to the scope and complexity of the problem and consider long-term resourcing and technical maturity objectives
  • Identify and communicate potential issues, tradeoffs, and risks for implementation decisions
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend data tools and process improvements that address existing and future-looking technology gaps
  • Develop and implement data quality checks, conduct QA, and implement monitoring routines
  • Build and enforce common design patterns and best practices to increase code maintainability
  • Document new and existing models, solutions, and implementations
  • Proactively seek opportunities to improve pipeline performance, reliability, and fault tolerance
  • Ensure compliance with privacy and security regulations and ACLU board policies that protect consumer data through processes and tooling
  • Grow the team’s technical expertise through mentorship, code reviews, and pair programming, with an empathetic voice. Help build a culture of learning.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant professional experience developing and maintaining robust, flexible, and scalable ETL processes and data pipelines in a production environment
  • Significant experience developing in Python
  • Experience integrating data of varying formats, quality, and volume in a data warehouse (e.g., Redshift, Snowflake)
  • Experience codifying data models using modern data transformation tooling (e.g., dbt, pandas)
  • Experience orchestrating data pipelines using modern frameworks (e.g., Dagster, Airflow)
  • Experience deploying and managing applications and services in a cloud environment (e.g., AWS, Azure) using infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation)
  • Extensive knowledge of software and data engineering best practices
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with identity resolution
  • Experience ensuring data quality and reliability though pipeline observability
  • Experience evaluating and configuring machine learning tooling
  • Experience working with Salesforce and Salesforce data models

COMPENSATION

The annual salary for this position is $143,943 (Level E). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
