Job Description

About us

We're a global leader in account-to-account payments, making it easy for merchants to collect both recurring and one-off payments directly from customers' bank accounts. Our global payments network and technology platform take the pain out of getting paid for 70,000 businesses worldwide, from multinational corporations to small businesses. Each year we process US$30 billion of payments across more than 30 countries. We're headquartered in the UK, with additional offices in Australia, France and the United States.

Intro to Engineering Management

As an Engineering Manager at GoCardless, you’ll be helping us build creative and fulfilled product engineering teams. You will lead talented and creative engineers who build products and systems they are proud of. You will push for exceptionally high-quality work and empower our engineers to make a big impact.

We have a variety of technical challenges here at GC, and can range from anything and everything from building a reliable and scalable network capable of processing $30bn+ per year, creating and improving the core product used by 70,000 businesses or establishing a platform function that allows the rest of the engineering org. to work fast and scale effectively.

Core Infratructure Team

The Core Infrastructure team sits within the Enablement pillar of our Foundations Division. Our mission is simply to protect and progress our infrastructure. Through this we enable all of our engineering teams to move fast while ensuring our customers can expect a reliable, secure and performant payments network.

To meet this mission we focus on Site Reliability Engineering (SRE): the combination of software and systems engineering to build fault tolerant systems, central to the success of GoCardless as we continue to scale.

SREs own the underlying shared cloud infrastructure our services are built on and are focused on the optimisation of existing systems, building infrastructure and eliminating toil through thoughtful automation.

They also own our database and observability stacks built on Postgres, Grafana, Elasticsearch and Kibana. Our core languages include Golang and Jsonnet which we use for managing our k8s estate running on Google Cloud Platform.

We are looking to expand our group of SREs to work closely with teams across engineering to provide expertise to help them with building scalable performant systems.

You will be joining a growing team who are at the heart of our ongoing success.

The Role

We’re looking for a talented manager with a software engineering background who wants to focus on team leadership and people management. You will have responsibility for one or more teams of between five to eight software engineers and you’ll work closely with commercial and operational stakeholders. In this role you will:

  • Hire and grow engineers into being the best engineers they can be
  • Maintain a supportive and engaging team culture
  • Insist on high standards of technical design and implementation and ensure your systems are operationally excellent
  • Deliver project work while managing the expectations of your stakeholders
  • Plan and prioritise impactful technical investment initiatives for your teams
  • Be a reflection of the GC Values that help us work with one another effectively

You will also be a key contributor to:

  • Improve hiring and recruitment processes
  • Develop product objectives
  • Ensure the security of our systems and working practices
  • Contribute to the evolution of the organisation’s working practices

Desired Skills

Given the versatile nature of the role, we’re looking for someone who learns fast, enjoys leading and collaborating with others, and is a pragmatic decision-maker. This role would suit someone with previous management experience or a technical leader who wants people management responsibilities.

We'd love to hear from you if you are:

  • Someone who is energised about supporting and growing a group of engineers, helping them become the best engineers they can be
  • Able to effectively communicate technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experienced in collaborating with Product Managers and other functions to deliver successful software products
  • Professionally experienced in coding at least one of the following, or similar: Ruby, Python, Go, Java, Javascript, C#
  • Committed to building reliable, well-tested systems
  • Enthusiastic about working in a strong culture of testing and code review

Life at GoCardless

When it comes to culture, we're proud of what we call the 'GC magic'. It's primarily defined by our values: Start With Why, Be Humble, Act with Integrity, and Care Deeply. They've been our bedrock since day one, and they continue to be one of the key factors of our success, and the reason we love showing up to work every day.

Because we're now delivering on our important, and ambitious vision to become the world's account-to-account payment network, we're working at pace. To help clear the path to success - so any obstacles and blockers don't slow us down - we've introduced our own set of operating principles, which live alongside our values. They're designed to help us successfully navigate our continued growth by helping us work together better. They provide guideposts around some of the key areas of how we operate so things are smoother, easier and ultimately lead to better outcomes. Read more about our values and operating principles here.

There's lots more to the magic. We view Diversity and inclusion as a business imperative, so we have a leader whose role it is to ensure we create an inclusive workplace where people from all backgrounds can thrive, and where people from all walks of life want to join us. We also have high engagement with our GeeCee-led 'employee resource groups' (such as BEAM, Inspiring, Pride, and Access) that are supported and sponsored by members of our Exec team. You can view our latest Gender Pay Gap report here.

We've also rolled out our 'Adaptive Working' and 'Work Away' schemes. Adaptive Working allows you to work flexibly, and in a way that fits around your lifestyle, whilst still ensuring our teams can collaborate effectively and get together and socialise. Work Away gives the flexibility to work away from your normal country of residence for up to 90 days in any 12 month period.

We also offer enhanced parental leave , pension packages, and you'll receive equity. Having this 'buy in' is a vital part of building a successful business where everybody - regardless of their role - can make a valuable contribution.

There's also our legendary 'GC Fridays'. They're four additional all-company days off every year, giving GeeCees a chance to switch off and relax, as a token of thanks for everyone's hard work and commitment.
