Job Description

Founded by Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is a new kind of philanthropy that’s leveraging technology to help solve some of society’s toughest challenges – from eradicating disease, to improving education. Across our core initiatives of Science and Education, we’re pairing engineering with grantmaking, impact investing, policy work, and advocacy, to progress in our mission of building an inclusive, just and healthy future for everyone.

Our Values

We believe we can help build a future for everyone.

  • We aim to be daring, but humble: We look for bold ideas — regardless of structure and stage — and help them scale by pairing engineers with subject matter experts to build tools that accelerate the pace of social progress.
  • We want to learn fast, but build for the long-term: We want to iterate fast and help bring new solutions to the table, but we also realize that important breakthroughs often take decades, or even centuries.
  • Stay close to the real problems: We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands our society’s challenges like those who live them every day.

Our success is dependent on building teams that include people from different backgrounds and experiences who can challenge each other's assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we look for a diverse pool of applicants including those from historically marginalized groups — women, people with disabilities, people of color, formerly incarcerated people, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or gender nonconforming, first and second generation immigrants, veterans, and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Opportunity

The mission of CZI Science is to support science and technology that will help make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the century. To help achieve this mission, the Imaging Program aims to give researchers everywhere the tools to visualize and quantify the biological processes underlying health and disease.

We have identified three strategic pillars to achieve this goal:

Frontiers . We support development of breakthrough technologies to enable imaging across spatial scales, in real time, throughout human body.

Community . To help accelerate imaging technology development and dissemination, and expand global access to imaging technologies and expertise, we are supporting key individuals and organizations that act as critical nodes of dissemination and standardization

Analysis . We fund and build image analysis tools like napari, an interactive, multi-dimensional image viewer for Python, and fund Imaging Software Fellows

We are also preparing to launch the Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging to push forward revolutionary new imaging technologies through high-risk, high-reward projects.

The Imaging Program is seeking a Science Program Manager to join our team. In this role, you will work with the Program Lead for Community to assist and manage the development and operations of grant programs to foster a global representative imaging community, including programs in progress, planned, or future programs to be developed. You will coordinate closely with the rest of the CZI Science team, CZI Technology team, and the external community; you will be a public advocate of CZI’s mission and our priorities and you will contribute to shaping our strategic directions in this area.

The ideal candidate will have deep, hands-on expertise in biological and/or medical imaging. Key qualities are (1) experience with imaging technology development (2) a passion for community engagement and (3) strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and work across a diversity of expertise.

You will

  • Work closely with Science Program Officers, Program Leads, Data Scientists, and Technology Staff to help evaluate, define, and lead programs in imaging
  • Work closely with grantees to help drive community-building projects, including regular calls, and in-person visits of grantees’ labs and imaging facilities
  • Represent the programs to the outside community through participation in and presentations at imaging related meetings, conferences, and workshops
  • Drive internal and external community engagement, including planning and running meetings, webinars, and workshops, and engage in outreach to ensure connections to grantees, partners, stakeholders, and imaging communities
  • Conduct landscape research to identify challenges and opportunities in advancing bioimaging globally, and write reports on the findings for internal and external audience
  • Support the grant-making process for current and future programs, including the strategy development, process, review, selection of the awardees, and relationship management.

You have

  • PhD degree or equivalent experience in biological imaging, medical imaging or similar field
  • 3+ years of experience in physical or virtual community-building and/or outreach activities, including jamboree/hackathon planning, workshop or conference organization, hosting tutorials, etc.
  • Strong understanding/experience with imaging technology development
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and work with stakeholders from different backgrounds and at different career stages
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities
  • Strong desire to accelerate scientific discovery and increase accessibility to science technology globally
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of organizational psychology is a plus
