Job Description

Let’s get to know each other

At Care/of, we take the guesswork out of feeling better by helping people build custom vitamin routines based on their unique needs. Whether it’s our personalized daily vitamin packs and powders through our direct-to-consumer business, or our multivitamins and blends with our retail partner Target, our products are backed by science and include a combination of highly-researched nutrients and traditionally used herbs. By providing honest guidance and better ingredients, we aim to help people feel empowered to make the right choices for their health.

Since our launch in 2016, we have raised capital from top investors including Goldman Sachs Investment Partners, Goodwater Capital, Tusk Ventures, RRE Capital, Juxtapose, and Bayer. In late 2020, Bayer secured additional investment in Care/of giving it majority ownership. By joining forces with Bayer, we are able to expand our ability to connect directly with new and existing customers and elevate our unwavering commitment to science-backed guidance, quality ingredients, and sustainable practices.

We’re excited to meet you!

What you’ll do:

As the Director of Product Design for Care/of, you will create innovative and impactful digital experiences for millions of users across our mobile app and web product. Everything you do will be rooted in a desire to make it simpler for our consumers to live healthy — and thrive.

You will exhibit all the characteristics of a Lead Product Designer, with the added skill that allows them to manage teams, develop talent and provide ongoing UX guidance to our team that drive significant impact on our business and users. This is a “player-coach” role that is uniquely split between design leadership, people management, and individual contribution.

As a design leader, you will:

  • Use your vantage point to spot opportunities and steer teams in the right direction
  • Partner with cross-functional leadership to define product strategy and ensure a cohesive user journey
  • Lead human-centered design processes across the entire product lifecycle

As a people manager, you will:

  • Build a thriving culture where designers grow in their careers and feel a strong sense of inclusion and belonging
  • Lead with empathy, transparency, and inclusivity, with a focus on ongoing feedback and keeping a finger on the pulse of the team's needs
  • Ensure the team is meeting a high-quality standard of work, while also individually contributing to the day-to-day design needs
  • Collaborate with designers to ensure the best, most relevant UX practices are employed and are evolving with the growth of the company
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the team’s work, and recommend adjustments to process
  • Evolve our design system with the goal of accessible, excellent and efficient design at scale

As an individual contributor and designer, you will:

  • Roll up your sleeves and design impactful solutions, working day-to-day with engineers, designers, content producers, and product managers, to ship features from start to finish
  • Rapidly produce multiple concepts and prototypes, knowing when to apply pixel-perfect attention to detail, and when to make low-fi sketches
  • Deeply understand our users’ needs, behaviors, and contexts in order to design features that fit their real, everyday lives
  • Take full ownership of your work and continue improving your craft as a UX designer. You will take responsibility for every last detail, every step of the way

Where you’ll be:

This role will require you to be at our collaborative workspace in Noho, NYC at least once a month for in-person collaboration when safety permits, with the option to work remotely the remainder of the time.

We are encouraging employees (whose job responsibilities allow) to work remotely with the option of returning to the office. We are committed to prioritizing workspace flexibility by building systems to create an inclusive and productive environment in which employees feel most comfortable working (role permitting).

Who you are:

You have a deep passion for building digital products that solve real peoples’ needs, while demonstrating a track record of delivering large business outcomes. You’re someone with 7+ years of UX or product design experience, preferably in consumer technology or brands. You’ve spent at least 3+ years managing designers in a leadership role.

We’re excited about you because:

  • You are a supportive mentor and empowering manager that has developed the careers of UX designers, and are a leader that designers are inspired to learn skills from
  • You are a designer at heart that wants to stay close to your craft. You are excited about rolling up your sleeves, being hands-on, and diving into low-level tasks
  • You are a UX expert that can drive cohesive, end-to-end, product design strategy across channels and platforms, with a specialized focus on UX & UXR
  • You hold a high bar for what makes good UI and visual design. The details matter to you
  • You know what it takes to establish and nurture a design culture that emphasizes design best practices
  • You have demonstrated an ability to evangelize design literacy within your team and cross-functionally
  • You have a proven record of keeping a sharp eye on the big picture and as well as its respective parts
  • You can advocate for our users and you always keep them at the center of your design process
  • You can convey strategy, disagree effectively, and work collaboratively with teams to get things done
  • You are constantly curious about user behavior, and you like running experiments. You are unafraid to pivot if we learn our assumptions were flawed or your hypothesis was wrong
  • You see things differently and love coming up with big ideas that don’t exist elsewhere

Even if you don’t meet all the requirements, we still encourage you to apply! If you’re submitting a cover letter, please note what makes you perfect for this role with the qualifications you have.

Why Care/of:

  • Competitive salary + compensation package
  • Competitive insurance packages with free medical, dental, vision plans.
  • Unlimited vacation time because you deserve it
  • Free vitamins and powders
  • Wellness perks with free access to online meditation services + fitness reimbursements (at-home workouts count!)
  • Virtual team-building events because we value staying connected and building community.
  • Socially and culturally relevant experiences geared towards personal + professional learning & development
  • Working with an amazing, fun-loving, spirited group of people
