Overall Purpose: The Member of Technical Staff discipline is part of a technical career program designed for employees who are working on new and emerging technologies AND who have made a significant commitment to their education by earning at least a 4-year degree in specified STEM areas. Employees must meet specific educational and experience requirements to move into and within these disciplines. Exceptions require Board Review. Refer to the Technical Career Pathway (TCP) SharePoint for approved universities and degree disciplines. Before an employee can be considered for one of these disciplines, the work must be evaluated and approved for use by Corporate Compensation via the Job Evaluation process. Applies advanced engineering and scientific knowledge to architecture, design and development work in a Research and Development environment for high-value technology and solutions tied to the strategic direction of the company. Key Roles and Responsibilities: Conducts design and development work in the areas of new products/technologies, systems/platform architecture, hardware/software development engineering, technical security, and QA Design/Certification. Work must primarily involve new and emerging technologies and technical architectures on projects with a status between inception and implementation/software maturity. May serve as subject matter expert during the continuous integration/continuous deployment cycle in a production environment focused on complex design, engineering, and development.
Program Strategy: The role must understand the business objectives of the initiative, the competitive landscape for the services and financial projections for each individual use case. The role must partner with the product development organization to guide the incorporation of security into the integrated roadmap. This will require providing experienced leadership and direction to outline all aspects of a complex, end-to-end technical security solution and delivery timeline. The role will influence the security roadmap by incorporating updates based on industry forces, emerging threats, technological advancements, and the regulatory landscape.
Business Unit Partnerships: The role will interface with other major business units contributing to the Homework platform including Product Development, Chief Security Office, AT&T Cybersecurity, Application Development, Wireless/Wireline network Design and Certification, and Operations. The role will serve as liaison to align business strategies, define solution requirements, design technical architecture, perform risk assessment, design countermeasures, and ensure security compliance across the end-to-end environment.
Industry Leadership: The role will assist with product definition and market validation tasks performed by the Product Development organization. This will require an understanding of the competitive landscape in the various sectors of the security market. Additionally, this will require an understanding of the regulatory landscape including existing and newly emerging security standards. The role must influence standards bodies and network engineers to ensure adoption of frameworks which maximize interoperability of carrier network components and vendor delivered security products – while supporting a flexible, software defined architectures to meet customer needs for customization and responsiveness.
Execution and Delivery: The role must provide general communications and detailed technical guidance to a variety of CSO, and BU platforms/personnel involved in the initiative. Additionally, the position will be required to provide updates to senior leaders including conducting research, preparing materials, presenting conclusions, and escalating issues as needed.
Required/Desired Skills: The position requires masterly level knowledge and expertise in wireline, wireless and home networking services, as well as proven experience and subject matter expertise in a wide variety of security domains. Most importantly, the position necessitates a comfort level with providing definitive recommendations on reasonable security measures to protect the enterprise and meet customer expectations, often with incomplete data available. The role will require supporting multiple, simultaneous architecture design and development projects. Finally, the role requires strong analytical abilities and communication skills to drive senior leadership understanding of key security issues and strategic decision making. Exposure to the constantly evolving nature of security threats. Security certifications that require continuing education. Direct experience designing protections against threats unique to critical infrastructure. For example, security clearances or cloud concepts like FEDRAMP certification. Familiarity with NIST as well as experience contributing to the development of similar frameworks is desired.

Experience: PhD in an approved field from an approved university with a minimum of 14 years relevant experience, or Masters’ degree in an approved field from an approved university with a minimum of 16 years relevant experience, or a Bachelors’ degree in an approved field from an approved university with a minimum of 18 years of relevant experience.
