This Sr. Mechanical Engineer position is within the Collins Aerospace Simulation Solutions & Services (SS&S) business area in Sterling, VA. Collins Aerospace SS&S-Sterling develops, builds and modifies aircraft simulators and training systems for both military and commercial customers. Devices range in complexity from desktop trainers to high-fidelity weapon systems and full-flight training systems. Initial role will be for a new program with a lot of new design challenges and lead opportunities.
Primary Responsibilities:

• Design interfaces that link groupings of individual COTS products into integrated systems.
• Generate Mechanical Design Documentation to include: workflow, routing, floor layouts, material handling, or machine utilization.
• Design and produce documentation to build simulator parts and assemblies per company standard.
• Design electro-mechanical interconnect assemblies.
• Create engineering specifications and interface with third-party vendors.
• Work closely with other engineering disciplines (i.e. manufacturing, electrical, software, and systems engineering) to ensure the mechanical design is appropriate for the project/product design approach.
• Participate in cross-functional team efforts in integration and qualification testing of training systems.
• Provides engineering estimates to complete for their own work.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of prior relevant experience OR
• Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience OR
• In absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required
• Engineering/Other Technical Positions: Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
• Designed and created mechanical drawings with SolidWorks (3D) and AutoCAD (2D)
• Must be a U.S. Citizen
• Must have an active U.S. DOD Security Clearance
• Ability to travel up to 30%

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficient in the Microsoft Office tool suite
• Proficient with Adobe Acrobat Pro
• Hands-on design knowledge designing sheet metal, welded and bolted together parts and assemblies.
