Organization Overview:
The Global Health Safety and Environment (GHSE) department provides standards, performs audits, consults on operational compliance, advises on best practices, consults on cultural improvement efforts, conducts benchmarking, and communicates HSE on every level. We blend high-quality counsel with decades of practical experience across a wide variety of industries.

Headquartered in the Lilly Corporate Center, with regional support located in Europe, we help business areas manage their HSE programs more effectively, meet critical compliance obligations in operations around the globe, and achieve improved control of workplace HSE aspects (hazards or risks).

Responsibilities:
This position provides functional leadership for Eli Lilly’s environmental sustainability program. This position requires internal networking with the HSE function, Corporate Affairs, Manufacturing, and other functions. It also requires an external focus to ensure current and emerging global regulatory requirements, stakeholder expectations, and best practices are integrated into Lilly’s sustainability strategy.

The primary responsibilities of this position will focus on enhancing and driving the company’s climate policy and actions in alignment with global frameworks. This position will lead the development of Science Based Targets and actions to support Net Zero and RE100 ambition.

This position is expected to develop and execute company practices related to environmental sustainability performance. This position will be responsible for keeping senior governance committees informed on the status of sustainability performance and coordinating and reporting Lilly sustainability information externally (i.e., CDP, esg.lilly.com, UNGC, etc.). The position coordinates Lilly’s interactions with external entities related to environmental sustainability (e.g. advocacy groups, consultants, environmental non-governmental organizations, investors).

Key Objectives/Deliverables

  • Provides HSE functional leadership for sustainability efforts.
  • External focus: tracks external trends in sustainability and external reporting, maintains external relationships with peer companies and trade organizations, and leads benchmarking efforts.
  • Conducts calculations and executes reporting of greenhouse gas emissions (scope 1, 2 and 3)
  • Coordinates external validation / assurance of Lilly greenhouse gas emissions
  • Leads efforts to report on progress toward goals and environmental performance internally and externally. Pursues external recognition for Lilly’s green initiatives.
  • Recommends climate and other environmental goals and actions for Lilly to pursue in alignment with evolving internal and external expectations.
  • Leads GHSE engagement with Lilly’s ESG team to include GHSE activities in the company corporate communications and public disclosures.
  • Coordinates collection and verification of goal data and other sustainability initiatives and projects.
  • Leads Lilly’s interactions with external organizations and partners related to sustainability initiatives.
  • Coordinates tracking and reporting of environmental performance metrics (including environmental projects captured in Lilly’s Sustainability Bond Framework)

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in science, environmental management, natural resources or communications, or comparable experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental sustainability and external disclosures/reporting.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Strong technical skills, ability to forecast impacts and sense of curiosity.
  • Ability to be the subject matter expert on climate-related topics and regulations both internally and externally
  • Experience with external communications
  • Ability to work cross functionally and lead cross functional teams
  • Ability to work with external organizations, consultants, and advocacy groups
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • Organizational and project management skills
  • Passion for environmental sustainability.
  • Experience in environmental affairs, sustainability, or product stewardship.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Ability to influence through persuasive communication (oral and written)
  • Ability to translate complex or technical subjects into easy-to-understand commentary for a broad audience
  • Ability to effectively network with management and staff personnel in a variety of cultures.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, and ability to plan and manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
