PayPal is looking for a fast-learning, dynamic lawyer to join our Legal team. This position is based in Japan and will report to the lead Commercial Lawyer for our Growth Markets (based in Singapore). This position will be responsible for providing commercial support to PayPal’s sales and marketing business units. The position will involve drafting and negotiating complex agreements and providing quick, concise and commercially focused legal advice. To succeed in this challenging role, candidates should be self-motivating and well-organised, with excellent interpersonal skills. Ideally this lawyer will be well-versed in technology, licensing and financial services, with a critical eye towards risk and regulatory issues. Because the job will involve a large amount of drafting, editing and writing, exceptional writing skills are an absolute necessity. Candidates should also have a global outlook and collaborative working style.

Job Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing legal advice to PayPal’s Japan Sales and Marketing teams. This is a business facing role in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, with regular exposure to senior stakeholders. The primary role responsibilities are:

  • Analysis, drafting and negotiation of commercial agreements (merchant agreements, marketing agreements, partnership agreements, etc.).
  • Working on commercial deals with key PayPal suppliers and partners.
  • Supporting the PayPal Marketing and Public Relations teams with advertising and press releases.
  • Updating PayPal’s online legal agreements, and in particular the User Agreement;
  • Partnering with PayPal legal team members across our global organisation and working with senior colleagues and functional leaders on a variety of strategic projects, regulatory issues, product development, business development opportunities and legal department operational matters.
  • Legal research and assistance on applicable requirements including regulations pertaining to payment services and electronic money, anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing, outsourcing, data protection and privacy, consumer protection, information security, and competition.
  • Creating and advising on templates, policies and procedures to address new requirements.
  • Providing training on relevant topics.
  • Identifying productivity improvements and helping to drive and direct process changes to ensure continuing efficiency.
  • Helping to effectively manage legal budget and cost controls where required.

WORK EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Admitted as a solicitor with at least six year’s post-qualification experience in either private practice or in-house.
  • General legal background and experience with common issues related to commercial, contractual, and corporate law. Knowledge and understanding of payments, financial services or fintech would be desirable. Experience with online businesses would also be advantageous.
  • Ability to collaborate with senior management and cross functional stakeholders.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to generate creative original legal documents.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, and a keen attention for detail.
  • Confident self-starter with ability to work independently.
  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm under challenging circumstances.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, with effective resolution of conflicting priorities.
  • Extremely proactive with a strong bias for action.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Flexibility to work with colleagues in Europe, the United States and Asia and accommodate calls and deadlines aligned to their time zones.
  • Fluency in English and Japanese (written and spoken). Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
