Job Description BAE Systems is seeking a Systems Chief Engineer - EO/IR to work in our Austin, TX location.

As an individual Sr. Principal level III contributor, you will be responsible for bringing technologies to bear on next-generation military/commercial applications. You will also perform, in the role of translating strategic endeavors, implementing vision statements, deriving and allocating functional and system level requirements all the way down to working detailed design, development, integration, implementation, test and verification/validation; both sides of the system lifecycle “Vee” and Agile Product development process on major Life-Cycle-Management (LCM) Programs between $50M and $150M.
Your duties may also include serving as Systems Analyst and System Architect for programs ranging from Internal Research & Development (IRAD), Engineering & Manufacturing Development (EMD), Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP), to Full Rate Production (FRP) of advanced systems. As a Sr. Systems Engineer (SE) technical contributor, you will work with other ATX & BAE Systems technical leadership and engineering staff members to grow and capture our knowledge through engineering changes, lessons learned and product/process improvements in your area(s) of expertise.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:
  • Perform SE Chief Engineering (CE) roles & responsibilities
  • Grow ATX understanding of Electro-Optical Infrared (EO/IR) (Passive & Active) technologies
  • Perform high-level EO/IR (Passive & Active) system architecture and functional decomposition
  • Be able to take system level EO/IR (Passive & Active) Mission Vision & Strategy, as explained by ATX technical leaders, and synthesize/decompose them down into Functional, Performance and Interface Requirements sufficient for HW/SW, Test and “Illities” staff to perform lower level EO/IR system design and analyses
  • Lead large LCM (> $50M- $100M) EO/IR (Passive & Active) programs, as well as smaller Commercial and Military Product Realizations over the system lifecycle; from Architecture/requirements development through product disposal
  • Lead the development of modeling, simulation and analysis tools to support requirements development & flow-down
  • Document and communicate architecture, designs and performance results to customers and stakeholders via presentations and white papers

  • Engineering Degree, advanced degree a plus, and 12+ years experience in technical planning, system integration, and leadership.
  • Must hold an active Secret clearance and eligible for Top Secret/SCI/SAP/SAR clearance
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience in communicating technical concepts
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills Preferred Education, Experience & Skills:
  • Working knowledge of: Laser Detection And Ranging (LADAR)/Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Laser, Day TV (DTV), Electro-Optics, Image Intensification (I2), Closed Circuit TV (CCTV), Low Light CCTV (LLCCTV), Radio Frequency (RF) and/or other active sensing or illuminated theory, techniques, components, and systems across the electro optical spectrum from Ultra-violet (UV) to Long Wave Infrared (LWIR); laser characteristics/solutions, atmospheric transmission and modeling; conduct of complex trade studies involving sensors, optical designs, link budgets, make/buy decisions, minimize Size, Weight and Power – Cost (SWaP-C), and environmental constraints; including performance testing of EO components, sub-systems, and complete systems.
  • Working knowledge of: Short Wave Infrared (SWIR), cooled Mid Wave Infrared (MWIR) and/or cooled/uncooled LWIR and/or other passive sensing theory, techniques, components, and systems across the electro optical spectrum from Near Infrared (NIR) to LWIR; atmospheric transmission and modeling; conduct of complex trade studies involving sensors, optical designs, link budgets, make/buy decisions, SWaP-C, and environmental constraints; including performance testing of EO components, sub-systems, and complete systems.
  • Working knowledge of requirements analysis and trade-off study for active and passive sensing EO/IR designs and effectively/efficiently converting stakeholder definition to architectural design.
  • Working knowledge of Systems Engineering modeling & simulation techniques using tools such as MATLAB, DOORS, Simulink, MagicDraw, Ansys, Code V/Zemax, NVThermIP/NV-IPM and methods such as AS-9145 (DFMEA & PFMEA), Agile, and Failure Mode, Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
  • Working knowledge of Systems Engineering and life cycle processes stages (such as waterfall, spiral, and agile/scrum) and process milestone execution decision gating reviews.
  • Architect, develop Concept of Operations (ConOps) and requirements, design, model, analyze, and test electro-optical (EO) infrared (IR) systems, subsystems and components (including Commercial Off The Shelf or COTS items) used in a variety of active and passive sensing solutions to military/commercial applications.
  • Digital Engineering, Model Based Systems Engineering (SysML or equivalent) and Agile Mindset principle, practices & processes and tools & techniques.
  • Experience supporting inter and multi-disciplinary teams consisting of mechanical, electrical, optical, software, test and systems engineers.
