Job Description

Do you believe that creators should have the ability to get paid for the value they give to their fans?

We do, which is why we're building Patreon, a platform that powers membership services for creators with established followings. Patreon strives to provide creators with insight, education, and tools that make it possible to retain creative control while running their creative business, so creators can focus on creating and energizing their fanbases.

Our user base has doubled in the last year alone, and we have paid over $3.5 billion directly to creators on our platform . In order to support this level of growth, we are looking for a Staff Data Scientist, Growth to join our team.

What you will do:

  • You'll own Patreon's experimentation practice and culture, leading analysis for the majority of our growth experiments and driving improvements to our experimentation framework and culture.
  • You’ll partner closely with the growth product team and other cross functional partners on a wide variety of data science projects.
  • You’ll conduct quantitative research on a diverse array of creator and member behaviors to shape growth strategy and enable partnering teams to make data-informed decisions.
  • You’ll advise business partners on defining success criteria and measure efficacy of product launches and other creator- and member-facing initiatives through experimentation or other statistical methods.
  • You’ll build reporting tools and dive into data to illuminate growth trends and answer key questions about our creators and our members.
  • You'll clearly communicate your technical work to the data team, your partners, and the rest of the company.

Skills and experience you possess:

  • You have spent 8+ years* helping teams, including growth teams, make great decisions with data.
  • You have expert experience with experimentation and have a wide variety of statistical analysis techniques in your toolbox.
  • You have solid analytical thinking. You ask the right questions and can frame data correctly.
  • You consistently strive to see beyond the numbers and understand what an analysis represents in terms of real-world applications.
  • You are a SQL expert. You have no problem regularly leveraging window functions, self-joins, and other SQL functions to accomplish your data analysis goals.
  • You have expertise in using Python or R to perform statistical analysis.
  • You’ve previously taught yourself new tools/techniques to expand your skill set, and are excited to continue doing so within a supportive community of data teammates.
  • You have a bias for using the right tools to get a job done with maximum efficiency. You have experience making tradeoffs between speed and accuracy.
  • You are an expert in building relationships with product, engineering, and design teammates.
  • You have experience partnering with senior decision-makers and presenting the implications of your work to leadership.
  • You are excited about working with and mentoring other data scientists.
  • You are an expert communicator with a love for clarity.

*Note: We are also accepting applications for Senior Data Scientists who have notable experience working with growth teams and have the majority of the skills and experiences outlined above. If you are a Senior Data Scientist and think you would be a great fit for this role, please apply below!

Projects you may work on:

  • Scale our experimentation abilities through improvements to our data infrastructure, experimentation framework, and company-wide experimentation best practices
  • Partner closely with product, engineering, and design teammates to design, implement, run, and analyze experiments geared at driving Patreon’s growth
  • Build tooling for leadership to be able to quickly and easily understand the underlying influences driving trends in Patreon’s growth
  • Partner with our growth marketing team to ensure we’re making data-informed decisions around our growth marketing campaigns
  • Study conversion behavior for creators and members and propose experiments and data products that will help us reduce the friction in our onboarding funnel

What you will have the chance to learn:

  • Learn from a full-stack data science team that does work across experimentation, analytics, machine learning, data infrastructure, and product data science
  • Learn about and study a diverse array of creator and member behaviors
  • Advance your skills in the tools our data team utilizes in their daily workflows: Redshift, MySQL, Airflow, Python, R, Mode, Tableau, Amplitude, Avo, and Datafold
  • Learn from strong data-minded growth teammates and cross-functional partners, all of whom are full of passion for our product and our mission

Who You'll Work With:

At Patreon, you'll join a high-performing and highly-empathetic team of people who proudly work on fulfilling our mission of funding the creative class. Our culture of creator-first, thoughtful teammates keeps work creative, stretching, and rewarding.

Our Core Values:

  • Put Creators First. WHEN CREATORS WIN, WE WIN.
  • Build with Craft. WE SIGN OUR NAME TO EVERY DELIVERABLE.
  • Make it Happen. WE DON’T QUIT, WE LEARN AND DELIVER.
  • Win Together. WE GROW AS INDIVIDUALS, WE WIN AS A TEAM.
