Job Description

BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed is the world’s leading independent digital media and tech company, with a cross-platform news and entertainment network that reaches hundreds of millions of people globally and spreads Joy and Truth across the internet.

Our portfolio of brands are household names that people rely on to inform and entertain, including: BuzzFeed, BuzzFeed News, Tasty, Nifty, Bring Me, Cocoa Butter, Pero Like, Worth It, and Unsolved to name a few! These properties and their Creators reach over 134M people a month through articles, lists, videos, animations, quizzes, podcasts, original series, newsletters and more.

The Role

BuzzFeed News is looking for an editor to lead a new Health team that will focus on providing readers with accurate, rigorous, personal, fun, and useful reporting about health and health products. The team will focus on the health topics that engage the BuzzFeed News audience, including mental health, reproductive health, sex, exercise, nutrition, disease-prevention, and drugs.

To start, the team will include one reporter, who the editor will hire. The editor will manage the daily and long-term editorial strategy of the team by writing, editing, assigning, and brainstorming pieces. The Health editor will also think about revenue and how direct-sold advertising create s a sustainable business — while remaining editorially independent and upholding rigorous journalistic standards — and to understand what is and what is not working with our audience. The editor will also work closely with BuzzFeed's commerce team to plan a commerce strategy.

Coverage areas should include, but don't have to be limited to:
  • Writing and reporting about health issues in context of the news of the day. This will require experience identifying health questions readers are searching for online, talking about on social media, and writing to us about.
  • Rigorously reported evergreen explainers. The desk should have a strong bent towards service journalism, with a clear voice and a good sense of humor.
  • Stories that expose inequities and uplift the voices of those who have been traditionally underserved by the medical establishment, including BIPOC and the LGBTQ community. This should include smart coverage that challenges conventional ideas around health, illness, and disability.
  • First-person testimonials from a diverse pool of freelancers.
  • Commerce writing — evaluating non-pharmaceutical health products, tele-health and app-based health products, sex and sexual health products, fitness products and more by reporting on them and writing reliable, editorially independent, and researched pieces.

You will work with the BuzzFeed News science editor on editorial strategy, and with partners in BuzzFeed on business and product strategy. You will report to the deputy editor-in-chief.

This position is open to journalists who do not have editing or managing experience but know that's a career path they want to move into. You also don't need to have experience with the business side of journalism, but you have to be eager to embrace and understand it. We do ask that the applicant have experience reporting or writing about health. The role is remote-friendly.

To make sure the Health editor is set up for success, we'll have conversations about goals and what it means to succeed in this role at BuzzFeed News with finalists for this position.

You Will

  • Write, edit, assign, and brainstorm engaging, revelatory, and timely articles about personal, public, and mental health, and can speak the language of the internet
  • Be on top of the news, culture, and conversation on social media around health issues of the day, and the historic inequities around personal, public, and mental health
  • Hire and manage a team of two that has the potential to expand
  • Work with people around BuzzFeed to ensure the team is a sustainable business
  • Strategize about covering health products that could appeal to our audience
  • Embrace and understand reader metrics
  • Edit copy for sensitivity, accuracy, inclusiveness, and authority without losing tone or voice

To Apply

Please include a resume; either writing or editing clips; and, if you wish, a brief cover letter. We may ask some applicants to respond to specific questions in a memo outlining their strategy for this role, and take an editing test.

All job applications must be received through the official BuzzFeed Jobs board ( https://www.buzzfeed.com/about/jobs ), including referrals. It is BuzzFeed's practice to not schedule job interviews until after an application is submitted through our jobs board.
