ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Project Manager in the Communications Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY.

The ACLU Communications Department creates, maintains, and expands message narratives to engage our supporters and other target audiences, to help protect and expand civil liberties and civil rights, and also illustrate the value and impact of the ACLU’s transformational work. Through our messaging, engagement with newsmakers, our written content, creative branding, and visual identity, we encourage support for the ACLU and help to build a more perfect union.

Reporting directly to the Chief Communications Officer , the Project Manager will support the work of the ACLU’s Chief Communications Officer by providing project oversight and coordination of cross-departmental work, including the ACLU’s Systemic Equality Agenda . This position will participate in meetings and discussions of a highly strategic and confidential nature, will liaise with staff regarding team and organizational initiatives, and will create and manage the structure, schedule and internal communication plans for related projects to drive their successful completion.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Management

  • Serve as lead for a wide range of initiatives, including Systemic Equality Agenda projects and special assignments tasked by the Chief Communications Officer, including establishing objectives, determining priorities, identifying risks, managing progress, gaining cooperation of others, assisting in resolving potential conflicts, and managing communications
  • Design and implement methods for tracking deliverables, schedules, and metrics for projects, providing clear tasks and accountability for project workstream leaders and team members to ensure deliverables adhere to internal quality standards
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation, providing a clear historical record of decisions, systems, procedures and communications involved in each project’s completion
  • Manage the seamless transition of completed projects to long-term owners of related workstreams, including creating and implementing effective roll-out plans, conducting post-completion evaluations to determine successful/unsuccessful project elements, and training of long-term workstream owners
  • Execute specific tasks within projects, including drafting communications, systems build-out and testing, and creating project evaluation and presentation materials
  • Establish and maintain a relationship management database to facilitate smooth navigation of partnerships, coalitions, and relationships with other advocacy, community, grassroots, grass tops, and movement organizations
  • Provide the Chief Communications Officer and other leadership regular updates on the progress of projects

Team Coordination & Meeting Facilitation

  • Support the Chief Communications Officer in developing critical communications by drafting talking points, memos, emails, documents and presentations in support of decision-making and in preparation for important internal and external meetings
  • Support in developing agendas, analyses and materials for team meetings; manage follow-up to key decisions directly with staff
  • Manage systems for communication so National and Affiliate staff have the most up-to-date information, feel connected to the larger team and mission, and interconnectedness of projects are realized and leveraged
  • Build relationships and foster a sense of team in a high-performing work atmosphere
  • Assess projects each week and maximize the Chief Communications Officer’s time by prioritizing their focus on most critical projects and problem solving
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Exceptional organizational, planning and project management skills with demonstrated ability to manage large, complex projects and coordinate collaborative work processes involving multiple stakeholders preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to speak and write in a clear, succinct and persuasive manner, such that expectations and timelines are clearly defined preferred
  • Flexibility to manage multiple priorities from a variety of sources; organizing and prioritizing effectively to impact areas of greatest need
  • Ability to work proactively in an ambiguous, yet dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to a collegial working environment
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office products required (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • At least 3 years in a project management role preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree and/ or project management certification is a plus

COMPENSATION

The annual salary for this position is $103,968 (Level G). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
