Practice Area Profile

BCG’s Energy practice helps companies navigate an increasingly complex business climate. The practice covers the Oil & Gas and Power & Utilities sectors. We also have deep knowledge in Energy transition and Sustainability, Energy Trading and Risk Management and Energy Engineering and Services. Our projects typically apply BCG’s core consulting skills in functional areas such as, digitalization, strategy, organisation or performance improvement, but in the distinctive environment of Energy. We also address projects that touch upon more operational or technical challenges, which we deliver through our expert consultants, occasionally partnering with external specialists. We work with the senior leaders of leading international and national oil companies, service providers, utilities, regulators and financial institutions. The Energy Practice has enjoyed rapid and sustained annual growth over several years, representing about 10% of BCG’s global business volume.Worldwide over 300 Partners, Principals and Project Leaders focus in the Energy space, supported by a large group of Energy experienced and trained Consultants and Analysts, many with pre-BCG industry experience. We are well known for our long history of cutting-edge research and thought leadership. Consulting with BCG ensures you work on the biggest issues being tackled by senior management, with a wide variety of experiences across different clients, topics and geographies.

What You'll Do

The practice is currently looking for an individual at the Expert Consultant level who has significant experience in refining operations. A qualified individual will play a critical role in enriching firm expertise on this topic and in bringing this expertise to our clients. Ideal candidates will have a refining operations background including roles as plant ops manager, production planning / scheduling and/or process engineering. Candidate must have 5-10 years’ experience working in refineries and/or petrochemical plants.

Roles & Responsibilities

Contribute to the business development of the oil downstream sector:

  • Contribute and drive leads and proposals together with the partners of the practice
  • Lead development of proposals from end to end around specific topics
  • Engage with the development of additional business beyond the delivery of recommendations on client engagements
  • Develop the topic agenda, create respective content and foster awareness of BCG’s competence

Lead and support execution of oil downstream operations projects to lead client transformations and drive tangible impact to our clients bottom line:

  • Responsible for the overall methodology
  • Work jointly with BCG and client project leaders, bring expertise to the team, both on issues specific to the industry and on questions asked by the client
  • Support multiple case teams, co-lead modules, especially those in need for broad experience and hands-on approach
  • Ensure the quality of the work, and the relevance of any synthesis and recommendations. Challenge work in progress, results and re-orient any analyses if needed
  • Support in change management process, help change stick in our clients
  • Enable and develop capabilities in client organizations

Build expertise in downstream operations within BCG and increase BCG’s profile externally:

  • Develop and contribute to BCG’s intellectual capital – work on BCG content projects to create new techniques and/or capture new ideas
  • Build and maintain “fact packs” related to core telecoms topics so there is an ever-available library of educational materials for internal and client usage
  • Responsible for supporting refining sector in writing external reports, papers, and social media contributions of its partners in concert with the Energy practice’s marketing lead
  • Identify conferences for BCG’s attendance and help coordinate our participation

What You'll Bring (Experience & Qualifications)

The ideal candidate possesses:

  • A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in refinery and petrochemical operations, including plant management, operations planning and scheduling and/or process engineering
  • Prior experience as process/ operations engineer in some of the below units:
    • Gas/ Naphtha Cracker (preferred)
    • Olefins plant - Ethylene, Poly Propylene (PP)
    • Poly Ethylene plants - LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE
  • Experience in troubleshooting and optimization of the Monomer and Polymer units
  • Should be involved in day to day plant monitoring, simulation and rating of equipment and well versed with key performance indicators of the unit
  • Experience in Operational Planning & Scheduling for batch production & quality control
  • Startup and commissioning experience and DCS experience will be an added advantage
  • Degree in chemical engineering or equivalent
  • Understanding and hands on experience of digital in the context of downstream operations a bonus
  • Business level proficiency in Mandarin in order to liaise with Mandarin-speaking clients
