In collaboration with the Senior Director of Business of Medicine, the Writer / Editor is responsible for the editorial development of business of medicine (BOM) content intended to drive traffic to Medscape. The senior editor is responsible for meeting traffic targets in these specialties and tracking progress against goals.

With the Editorial Director, the Writer / Editor is responsible for allocating assigned content budget and commissioning traffic- driving articles. The senior editor will also contribute to our business of medicine market research initiatives and publications. The site editor will develop, edit, and review freelance contributions to ensure that commissioned pieces arrive on time, on spec and are published without error.

  • Contribute ideas and coordinate workflow for BOM magazine.
  • Coordinate editorial assets required for BOM Report (eg Compensation Report, Insurer Ratings Report, EHR Report, Ethics and other). Assets include report captions, tags, discussions, polls, etc. Contribute concepts for future reports as well.
  • Develop ideas, research, and write articles in subject areas relevant to Business of Medicine including practice management, electronic health record, legal and malpractice, ethics, etc.
  • Monitor traffic and performance of articles.
  • Look for and develop content experts among physicians and practice management experts for content and special reports for BOM site.
  • Identify and contact experts for video interviews; develop questions for interviews, set up interviews on topics of Medicare, Healthcare reform, Malpractice, EHR and Technology/e-prescribing, wireless, Employed doctors and group practice, Personal Finance, Practice management. Own an area and develop coverage.
  • Format and traffic articles through editorial and production, including creating a discussion and poll for relevant contributions.
  • Help develop Reader Advisory Panel for Business of Medicine magazine and site.
  • Contribute to the management and editorial development of the forthcoming Business of Medicine print magazine, “Medscape Business.”
  • Track site performance and assess readership and usage data of published content to inform strategy for identifying topics and subjects of interest to specialty members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience; journalism degree preferred
  • 5+ years of related editorial writing experience required; feature trade or consumer reporting preferred
  • Provide work samples demonstrating ability to interview subjects, conduct interviews, and construct articles
  • Provide work samples demonstrating writing and editing of digital content.
  • Possess excellent editorial (writing, editing, and idea development) skills
  • Demonstrated skills in an organizational/ Project Management function
  • Experience writing in the business or financial field; health care industry preferred
  • Attention to detail, fact-checking, and review of survey slide content for accuracy
  • Proficiency of Microsoft office product suite
