The Magnet Design Engineer position provides the successful candidate with an immediate opportunity to be involved with technology that helps save lives, improve patient outcomes, and reduce the cost of medicine around the world. You are responsible for

In this role as Magnet Design Engineer, you will apply your skills and knowledge electromagnetic aspects of superconducting MRI magnets to support the Suzhou production facility in case of failure of electromagnetic functions of superconducting MRI magnet products that are manufactured in Suzhou. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Resolution and troubleshooting of magnet electromagnetic issues that arise at the Suzhou production facility.
  • Non-standard shimming, rendering assistance to manufacturing in case of shimming problem.
  • Understanding and interpreting magnet manufacturing drawings related to coils, schematics, wire lists, Final test documentation and software features, which are critical to proper magnet functionality.
  • Reviewing and resolving non-conforming material reports (NCMRs) from the factory and vendor supplied materials related to electromagnetic functions of the magnet.
  • Reviewing and ensuring adequacy of vendor qualification activities to ensure compliance with applicable industry standards.
  • Understanding effects of electrical Specs tolerances on magnet magnetic performance and reliability. Adequate interpretation of Electrical and Magnetic Specs at all assembly levels.
  • General activities such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), tolerance analyses and corrective action preventative action (CAPA) activities and procedures.
  • Actively participating in multidisciplinary project teams.

You are a part of

A global R&D team with diverse backgrounds and expertise. The Suzhou based team works in close collaboration with Development Engineering in Latham, NY as well as Project Management, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Service, and Quality team members throughout the product lifecycle.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

Experience/Education:

  • B.S. level in physics or an engineering discipline, M.S. preferred
  • 3+ years of practical electromagnetic analysis & design experience

Required Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including fluency in English and Chinese languages.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated use of advanced electromagnetic design tools (Opera, Maxwell, HFSS, Remcom, CST, etc.)
  • Ability or willingness to learn software written in C++, C#, preferably (also) in a modern scripting language (Ruby, Python)
  • Ability to provide technical leadership in ambiguous situations

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Superconducting magnet design and operation
  • Superconducting magnet component design
  • Demonstrated use of magnetic materials to shape magnetic fields
  • Quench propagation analysis
  • Quench protection system design
  • Combined electromagnetic and mechanical force/stress analysis
  • Software tools – Mathcad, ANSYS, Inventor, AutoCAD, SpaceClaim, LabView, Matlab
  • Experience working with cryogenicC
  • Experience working with ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code
  • Hands on experience with fabrication methods
  • Hands on experience performing lab testing and data acquisition
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5
