Summer Communications Internship

Job Description

Location : Remote

As an intern with the ACLU of Virginia Communications Team, your primary responsibility will be to work with the ACLU-VA digital manager to support social media, website production, and other digital efforts, including the production of graphics and short-form videos for social and website use. The intern may also support other communications staff in the production of public education materials by conducting research, drafting outlines, building lists, and supporting the distribution of materials. The intern will also engage with staff from the Legal, Advocacy, and Development teams during their internship.

Educational benefits include an inside look at the communications process, participation in brainstorming and strategy sessions, and hands-on experience in creating social media graphics, video production, and developing first draft collateral materials. They will also hone their project and time management skills. Students will also gain an understanding of current criminal legal, voting rights, and other ACLU issues.

Skills & Qualifications

Applicants must be an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student during the duration of the internship period. College and graduate students pursuing degrees in graphic design, digital media, marketing, communications, mass media, and/or advertising are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be creative and show an aptitude for visual and written storytelling. They should have a passion for civil liberty and civil rights issues and be comfortable supporting the ideals of the ACLU. Qualified applicants love to learn, are enthusiastic, creative, and have strong written and verbal communications skills and a natural ability to work as a contributing member of a team.

Compensation & Schedule

This summer internship position is full-time for a minimum of 300-hours. Part-time internships are not available during the summer. ACLU-VA office hours are 9:00am – 5:00pm M-F. Interns will be paid a rate of $18/hour and are encouraged to apply for academic credit. Currently the ACLU-VA staff are working from home, so candidates need to have the ability to work productively from an offsite location.
