Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Principal Enterprise UNIX System Administrator PSJH to our location in Beaverton, OR; Portland, OR; Renton, WA; Seattle, WA; Anchorage, AK or Irvine, CA.

We are seeking a Principal Enterprise UNIX System Administrator PSJH to focus on the role of the Server Operating System (OS) in the enterprise and how it can help achieve strategic goals and objectives. They leverage their deep technical expertise to routinely lead troubleshooting efforts, design sessions, projects/initiatives, and other bodies of work related to the UNIX Systems OS. They also mentor and develop the Associate, and Intermediate level members of their team. They work independently with other Information Systems (IS) professionals (e.g. Operational, Engineering, Architecture, and Application teams) applying their specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to ensure the UNIX Systems OS is optimized for the delivery of clinical and business services in support of the IS Strategic Plan. Ensuring this level of optimization requires close work with clinical and non-clinical caregivers, project managers, and other IS professionals in order to enumerate requirements from these various groups of stakeholders. The Senior Enterprise UNIX Systems Administrator uses their expert knowledge of the UNIX Systems OS to autonomously determine the optimal configuration of the OS and then configures the OS in the manner they determine best meets requirements. In the course of their work, they also author new or modify existing documentation related to the UNIX Systems OS. Finally, they serve as an in-house, operational escalation point for troubleshooting systems experiencing complex issues and as well as developing and implementing solutions for these complex issues.

The environment is fast paced and very dynamic which requires an individual capable of making independent decisions at times without complete knowledge or guidance but doing so in a manner that accounts for industry recognized best practices to help ensure the most positive outcome in a given situation.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Work independently without supervision.
  • Provide industry-recognized, expert level optimization of the UNIX Server Operating System configuration to support requirements for clinical and non-clinical services.
  • Research and resolve technical issues related to the UNIX Server Operating System and participate/lead problem resolution efforts.
  • Provide technical peer review and consulting services
  • Mentor and coach junior-level team members.
  • Author clear, concise and complete communications for change, incident and problem management.
  • Plan, research, and design solutions in support of strategic plans or clinical/business requirements.
  • Collaborate with Architecture, Engineering, and peers to develop enterprise-wide technical standards and roadmaps.
  • Estimate infrastructure component costs with vendors and internal technology resources for current and proposed projects.
  • Provide direction in developing specifications/requirements for selecting and testing new technologies.
  • Evaluate system designs, provides recommendations to improve performance, security, and functionality.
  • Develop and guide the implementation of solutions that improve information reporting and metrics.
  • Lead root cause analysis on UNIX Server Operating System related problems.
  • Create and maintain internal training materials to provide training to appropriate information systems staff for procedures, processes and knowledge transfer.
  • Assist in budgeting activities for Enterprise projects, department capital and operational budgets, feasibility studies and cost/benefit analysis. Participate in the development and adherence to project schedules.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices related to the UNIX Server Operating System.
  • Monitor, respond to, and remediate alerts associated with the UNIX Server Operating System.
  • Patch the UNIX Server Operating System and remediate security vulnerabilities related to the UNIX Server Operating System.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent education/experience.
  • 8 years Related experience.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Advanced experience in UNIX Operating Systems.
  • Advanced Experience with IBM AIX PowerServer series based servers.
  • Advanced Experience with high availability configurations such as IBM PowerHA.
  • Advanced Experience with SAN technology including EMC and Flash arrays as well as Brocade or Cisco fiber infrastructure.
  • Fluency in scripting in a high level language in the UNIX environment such as Perl or Python.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting and resolving UNIX Server Operating System connectivity and software failures. Added ability to be exceptionally proficient at directing local staff in support of remote problem resolution.
  • Experience with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) or similar enterprise backup technologies.
  • Advanced Experience with RedHat Linux running on Intel based systems.
  • Experience with the management of relational database systems in the UNIX environments, such as Cache, Oracle and others.
  • CompTIA Linux , RHCE Certification upon hire.
