Production Editor – Zeitgeist

Penguin Random House is currently seeking a Production Editor to join an innovative team focused on demand-based, data-driven original titles and adaptations across a variety of nonfiction genres . This position will play an essential role in maintaining editorial standards throughout each book’s production, while collaborating closely with editorial, production, and design colleagues to bring titles to market quickly. Additional responsibilities include:

  1. Hiring and managing a roster of freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers
  2. Reviewing the work of freelancers, which includes clearing manuscripts and post-copyediting
  3. Collating changes from authors, editors, and freelancers in early manuscript passes and page proofs
  4. Coding and tagging manuscripts for design and composition
  5. Copyediting cover copy and paperback additional materials, including sales quotes and marketing copy
  6. Proofreading covers, interiors captions, and additional materials
  7. Collaborating on book schedules and maintaining deadlines
  8. Composing freelancer contracts and executing all payments
  9. Creating and maintaining networks in SAP
  10. Inputting approved sales and marketing copy into internal systems

  • Minimum of 5 years of publishing experience, including experience independently working on original and reprint content
  • Strong analytical, copyediting, proofreading, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual Style
  • Experience managing freelancers
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, and all electronic editing components
  • Highly organized with the ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Is adaptable to change and enjoys working through new challenges
