Production Manager -- Square Enix Books

Penguin Random House Publisher Services is seeking a Production Manager to work on a growing list of titles comprising graphic novels (manga), trade novels, art books, and other publishing products. Reporting to the Director, Publisher Services, you will oversee all aspects of the book production cycle, from initial estimates through proofing and printing to reprints and inventory management.
Responsibilities

  • Evaluate paper, printing, binding, and jacket or cover requirements for each title
  • Send requests for estimates to domestic and international vendors; negotiate with vendors to secure best pricing, material quality, and scheduling
  • Prepare and maintain production schedules and trackers, working closely with in-house staff and external contractors to ensure deadlines are met
  • Create and issue purchase orders to vendors for all phases of prepress and manufacturing
  • Work with in-house staff and contractors to prepare print-ready files, trouble-shooting technical, procedural, and quality issues as they arise
  • Send print packages to vendors; traffic proofs and other production materials to and from vendors and in-house staff
  • Oversee the color proofing process, manage color corrections, and clearly communicate changes to vendors
  • Work with in-house staff and vendors on reprints and inventory management
  • Review and approve vendor invoices, checking against quotes and purchase orders
  • Curate product archive and digital assets management system; maintain product information databases and spreadsheets
  • Maintain effective business relationships with vendors and investigate prospects for new printers and partners worldwide
  • Ensure quality control throughout, from proofing through finished product, with a strong eye for detail and accuracy
  • Other departmental duties as assigned

Requirements

  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in book publishing or a related field
  • Thorough knowledge of pre-press, estimating, scheduling, paper, printing, and binding for 1- and 4-color print production
  • Excellent time-management, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work independently in a deadline-driven environment, effectively set priorities, and adapt to changing needs
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, InDesign) and Mac operating system
