AA Knopf is excited to hire an Executive Editor to join our growing team, to acquire upmarket crime fiction and commercial fiction, expanding our current list and increasing the diversity of our range of fiction titles. We’ve seen some incredible success over the years, publishing such bestselling authors as Stieg Larsson, Carl Hiaasen, Judy Blume, and Lara Prescott, and are exploring new avenues to reach readers. The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in, and familiarity with, both genres, good relationships with related agents and authors, excellent editorial skills, and strong written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Identifying and acquiring profitable projects within the crime and commercial fiction genres
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with authors and agents
  • Delivering conceptual, structural, and line edits to authors
  • Presenting books, and your vision for them, effectively at internal meetings and to booksellers, media, and other contacts across varying industries
  • Writing cover copy for manuscripts and books, appealing to a wide array of audiences
  • Liaising with multiple internal departments (production, managing editorial, design, etc.)

This is a stellar position for someone with a passion for acquiring, building and training a team and collaborating across several teams. We’re eager to find someone who’s able, and of course excited, to make intriguing, suspenseful and tantalizing books, to entertain and inspire our audience, and to invite and engage with new readers. With this in mind we’re eager to welcome those whose backgrounds aren’t from traditional Publishing fields, and have tailored our search according to what you can achieve and showcase.
Please apply to join us if you meet the following requirements:

  • Ability to identify and acquire manuscripts or projects with strong commercial appeal;
  • Demonstrable and deep editorial, publishing, or bookselling experience, particularly end to end project acquisitions experience
  • Ability to talk to, and demonstrate, intimate knowledge of commercial fiction or similar genre
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High level organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Team player with a proven ability to juggle multiple projects within a deadline environment
  • Highly proficient with software and other tools used for editing, reviewing, uploading, and transferring manuscripts and promotional materials

We’ve designed our interview process to enable you to demonstrate your skills as much as possible, starting with the application. With this in mind, please expand in a cover letter why you’re putting yourself forward to join the team at Knopf as the next Executive Editor.
