Job Description
Job: Engineering
Primary Location: United States-California-Sunnyvale-US-CA-Sunnyvale
Schedule: Full-time
Requisition ID: 201807
DescriptionJoining Intuitive Surgical means joining a team dedicated to using technology to benefit patients by improving surgical efficacy and decreasing surgical invasiveness, with patient safety as our highest priority.
Patients first. Always. We design and build the world’s best surgical robotic systems.
Our surgical systems are deployed worldwide and help improve the lives of over 1 million people per year. Those people get back to their families and lives faster with less pain.
- Are you passionate about technology? Do you want to have a direct impact on helping people live better lives?
- Interested in the medical applications of robotics?
- Do you like to build complex distributed systems?
- Does working in a multidisciplinary, systems-oriented design team sound exciting?
Our multiport software team is expanding to meet the needs of next-gen flagship product development. We’re looking for a high energy, talented, individual to contribute broadly to the embedded software stack, with a focus on “systems software”. It’s important to emphasize that while you’ll be designing communication services & clean abstraction layers between the OS and application software, you are in your heart, an integrator. When the system doesn’t function as expected, you see the Venn diagram and pull together the intersecting people/groups to come up with solutions. To be successful, you must possess a strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward – there are no passengers on this ship, only crew.
Responsibilities: - Synthesize solutions from complex and fuzzy material
- Have a commitment to the highest product quality
- Work on a cross-functional team to develop technical specifications and evaluate design trade-offs
- Design and develop product-focused, rock-solid, C++ software in a heterogeneous, multi-processor SoC/FPGA/real-time-embedded environment
- Perform formal risk analysis and develop software mitigations
- Contribute broadly to many areas of software development, including but not limited to:
- Highly distributed inter-processor communication
- Extension of current frameworks to new processors and operating systems
- Control and integration of external OEM devices
- Distributed system C++ applications
- Customize and productize embedded operating system distributions
- Create drivers that interface with custom FPGA devices
- Mentor junior engineers through design, V&V and transfer to manufacturing activities
QualificationsRequirements: - A natural communicator with high attention to detail
- Passionate about developing cross-platform, object-oriented C++ code
- Understanding of commonly used messaging, RPC frameworks and their associated tradeoffs for use in distributed embedded systems
- Strong ability to isolate and debug interdependent hardware/software problems
- Experience working on product-focused designs in a team environment
- Motivated to work with interdisciplinary teams
- A desire to deliver a quality and innovative product that improves many people’s lives
- Minimum, 10 years industry experience developing and supporting embedded systems
- Bachelors or Master’s degree in Software/Computer Engineering
- Experience with designing software products in an FDA or other regulated industry or for mission critical applications; comfort with concepts of design input, design output, traceability, and risk analysis, and mitigations
About the Team: We are a small group that works in a focused, high-energy environment. We believe in applying first principle thinking, data driven decision making, continuous learning, systematic planning to deliver results and achieve our goals. Our team designs and builds the embedded software platform for next-generation surgical robotic systems. Many other development teams leverage our solutions and therefore, we emphasize tearing down organizational silos and a strong culture of collaboration.
We are an AA/EEO/Veterans/Disabled employer.We will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records in accordance with fair chance laws.
