Train Control Systems Consultant

We are hiring! The Train Control Systems Consultant can be based out of any US hub office and reports to our Rolling Stock Systems/ Electrical Service Manager. The Train Control Systems Consultant provides technical advisory for freight and commuter rail transit authority client(s) on rail control systems projects, particularly the control office subsystem of positive train control. Responsibility will include total system understanding of the design and function of systems such as the IETMS Positive Train Control systems, and Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System (ACSES II). This expertise will be needed for contract document reviews for client railroads in order to ensure that the Prime contractor complies with the technical and contractual requirements for system design, production, delivery, installation, test and commissioning and associated documentation development. This also will include providing technical review, comment and oversight on Positive Train Control (PTC) Safety Plan documentation.

How will you contribute to the team?

  • This person will advise the Project Manager in the development of project plans, master schedules, project and reviews.
  • This person will have close interface with the client, OEM’s and major suppliers. Position responsibility will include complete understanding and management of the scope of work for project and advise the Project Manager as necessary on technical issues.
  • Day to day technical advisory of Rail Office Control systems, design, test, installation and system test.
  • Ability to work with all contractors in behalf of the client to ensure project delivery and quality of work.
  • Advise clients on recommended actions relating to the project.
  • Participate in periodic program reviews to review project progress against planned schedule, costs, issues and corrective actions.
  • Ensure contractors comply with all technical specification requirements.
  • Review and comment on FRA/FTA required reports as necessary
  • Typical travel is expected to be 25% of the time however on occasion project needs may require high levels of travel.

What will you contribute?

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering is preferred. This level may be achieved with fifteen years experience in rail signaling since Bachelor's or fourteen years since Master's. In lieu of a degree, 20 years of theoretical and applied experience in advanced Rail Signaling Systems required. Typical incumbent has 20+ years of experience.
  • Registration as a licensed professional engineer is generally required. However, extensive experience may be substituted in lieu of licensing.
  • Thorough knowledge of a major transit signal system. Strong quantitative, analytical, problem solving, decision-making skills, and critical-thinking abilities. Strong persuasive ability, technical writing and communications skills are expected at this level, proven through technical presentations, technical papers and/or participation in technical committees. May be eligible for project management training.
  • Familiarity with railroad and/or transit industry and rail transit vehicles.
  • Familiarity with rail signal systems and positive train control.
  • Experience with transit authorities, OEM’s and contractors.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • The ability to work effectively remotely within a virtual team environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
