Platform Leader, Adhesives & Coatings

Job Summary:

The Platform Leader, Adhesive and Coatings position is a new position in charge of delivering new differentiated products based on the technology platform of Zymergen. This starts at conceptualizing what new building blocks (based on biotech) can deliver in terms of new properties, interacting with the broader organisation to make sure customer needs and opportunities are supported and leading the broader technology team to deliver the products. He/She will directly lead the CAR scientists and CROs and leverage other resources available within R&T products and Zymergen as a whole. The person is also responsible for developing the technology roadmap for both the Coatings and Adhesives markets and able to represent Zymergen externally when needed.

Job Description and Specific Responsibilities

• Provide technical direction throughout early stage of the CAR projects based on first principles leveraging biotechnology
• Assess project feasibility, set milestones and ensure efficient execution
• Lead and manage the adhesive research and technology platform
• Maintain a safe (lab) work environment and ensure safe work practices
• Maintain the highest level of technical expertise in the adhesives team to provide Zymergen with an industry leading research capability
• Support technology transfers, internal as well as leveraging external to CMO’s
• Capture Intellectual Property emerging from the Adhesives research projects
• Interface with the commercial/marketing team to understand the voice of the customer and service short terms needs/ data management, samples creation etc
• Drive the Adhesives team to develop new solutions based on industry trends (supported by the commercial team).

Qualifications/Experience

• PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or related field
• 7+ years of extensive industrial experience in a research focussed environment with strong link to the business
• Strong scientific background in Adhesives, Coatings or related field
• Experience in scaling products from R&D phase to mass production direct or indirect (as team member).
• 5+ years of experience in team management and interfacing with commercial/marketing teams and customers
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
