Job summary

The Red Hat Open Innovation Labs (Labs) team is looking for a Lab Automation and Site Reliability Architect to join us in Australia. In this role, you will work as part of a dynamic and diverse global team at Red Hat with some of the industry's emerging technologies around containers and industry-leading enterprise open source solutions. You'll ensure that our engagements are not just a technology implementation, but an IT Operations (Ops) and organizational transformation. You'll focus not only on technology, but people and processes, enabling them through a residency-style engagement in which consulting engineers work together with customers in small teams to build, test, and iterate over innovative automation use cases attached to real business and IT value. As a Lab Automation and Site Reliability Architect, you will serve as a lead architect in our lab engagements, cocreating automation solutions using emerging open source technology and modern software engineering practices. You'll coach the team and facilitate the design and technical delivery of our solutions. As you do so, you'll promote enthusiasm for building great automation solutions, using principles of open source and agile culture to take the customers toward real DevOps. You'll support everything from the scoping of Labs residencies to delivering the engagements. Ideally, you should be a senior architect with practical experience and passion for coaching teams, design, communication, and delivering infrastructure automation solutions. You will contribute to developing, maintaining, and operating our Labs' push-button Infrastructure. You will code and automate the traditional roles of a system administrator at scale.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Deliver discovery, analysis, and IT Ops automation design workshops for teams of technical and non-technical backgrounds, focused on successful customer outcomes with the latest Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform solutions
  • Serve as a lead contributor to automation of infrastructure management and help showcase outstanding Infrastructure as Code (IaC) implementations using Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform and other technologies
  • Serve as a technical Leader of IT Ops Automation residencies to reduce team TOIL through automated network, platform, or security service provisioning and maintenance
  • Demonstrate leadership in the automation community by guiding the development of the Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) Automation Practice and by sharing inspired and well-developed ideas in the Labs community
  • Contribute to the development of repeatable and streamlined solutions and methods that will bring greater efficiency and effectiveness to our residency delivery
  • Contribute to, develop, and expand the various client and server-side frameworks related to the push-button infrastructure running on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and Red Hat OpenStack Platform
  • Work alongside customers, consulting with them on how to manage, deploy, and operate cloud solutions at scale using the principles of site reliability engineering (SRE)
  • Maintain technical competency in all aspects of our technology and market and evaluate solutions and technologies; make recommendations and present reports
  • Mentor junior engineers at Red Hat and within our customers, partners, and communities

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical discipline
  • 4+ years of experience focused on the automation of IT environments; experience architecting, designing, and delivering solutions
  • Deep experience with configuration management and provisioning technologies like Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, Chef, Puppet, or Terraform
  • Experience with system provisioning using PXE and Kickstart and similar solutions; Red Hat Satellite is a plus
  • Broad and deep experience with compute, network, and storage configurations, including cloud technologies like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Compute Engine (GCE), and Microsoft Azure, Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) technologies like Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and virtualization technologies like Red Hat Virtualization, oVirt, or VMware
  • Solid knowledge of and experience with Linux OS, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or Fedora Core
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and other container tools is a big plus
  • Direct Level 2 or Level 3 networking experience; knowledge of software-defined networking (SDN) is a plus
  • Working experience with shared storage technologies like NFS, iSCSI, CIFS, or Red Hat Ceph Storage
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work both on your own and as part of a team
  • Great written and verbal communication and mentoring skills; passion for open source software as a user or developer
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the year within ANZ for various customer-facing and internal work efforts
