Responsibilities

The Principal Software Engineer is responsible for the development and enhancement of the Customer Data Warehouse to support the marketing of promotions and programs to Southwest Airlines Customers. Primary job tasks include, but are not limited to: Teradata SQL, ETL development and support, data analysis, shell scripting, and Customer research. Additional responsibilities include coaching and mentoring junior Team Members, driving process improvements, resolving technical issues of high complexity, provide guidance and oversight to outside development teams, self-directs according to business objectives, improves team productivity, maintains a broader understanding of the business and be a consistent thought leader.

WORK ACTIVITIES/CONTEXT:

  • Lead initiaves for developing and maintaining Teradata SQL, Ab Initio graphs, shell scripts, and Teradata objects
  • Develops and enhances the Customer Data Warehouse, self-directed in executing through complex requirements
  • Evaluates and recommends emerging technologies and trends and resolves hardware issues throughout the department
  • Employs resources and optimizes work efficiently in implementing cross-department technology initiatives, defining and developing code that loads, extracts, or aggregates data from the warehouse
  • Makes recommendations to drive Marketing strategy forward and follows through against promised timelines
  • Understands big picture and impacts with a focus on future state. Provides solutions and recommendations for issues
  • Tells a compelling and relevant story that conveys well thought-out recommendations, creates a point of view, collaborates effectively, presents with poise and confidence, and explaining results to business users in a non-technical fashion
  • Identifies and evaluates the most important opportunities and issues across the enterprise to be addressed and drives Leadership attention to those opportunities
  • Is adaptable to evolving business needs and a changing environment
  • Solution oriented; positively impacts the environment of his or her direct team and Marketing department
  • Works with leader to align on priorities, constructively address project work, and build personal development plans
  • Mentors teammates and brings new tools into the team and leads education and development efforts
  • Must be able to meet any physical ability requirements listed on this description.
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee’s Leaders.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Degree in Computer Information Systems or Computer Science preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 12 years experience in software development and support required
  • OR, minimum 10 years experience in software development and support required with an advanced degree
  • Experience with programming in SQL and ETL tools required
  • Strong knowledge of SQL required
  • Experience in Ab Initio preferred
  • Experience in Teradata preferred

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and the ability to achive productivity in an unstructured environement through thoughtful question-asking, self-structuring, creative ingenuity, and self-management
  • Self motivated and able to work independently and autonomously when asked
  • Ability to coach and mentor less senior Developers
  • Is a curious learner

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines.
