Job Description

The Atlantic is seeking a highly-technical leader to oversee our newly-formed Data and Delivery Engineering team. As the head of Data and Delivery Engineering, in either our DC or NYC office, you will be at the forefront of The Atlantic’s ambitious reimagining of our digital operations. Under your leadership, this team will establish and implement organization-wide approaches to system design, cloud architecture, continuous delivery and data formats. This team will also operate and expand The Atlantic’s existing digital and data infrastructure. In this role, you will be central to our Amazon Web Services migration and to our transition to a service-oriented architecture.

The Atlantic

With over 160 years of history and 36 million readers a month. As a technical organization, we use a wide range of technologies—including AWS, Google BigQuery, Python and Terraform — and we are actively evaluating new technologies to improve our workflow and products. As a team, we value curiosity and willingness to learn over specific technical experience.

The Data and Delivery Engineering Team

The Data and Delivery Engineering Team creates, builds, maintains and runs the delivery, data and production infrastructure at the heart of The Atlantic’s product, editorial, subscription, advertising and data operations. Over the last few years, The Atlantic has grown from a small digital organization to a team of dozens. Today, our biggest challenge and our greatest opportunity as the Data and Delivery Engineering team is to adapt the way The Atlantic builds and operates technology to the new scale of our operations. To address this challenge, we intend to develop standardized approaches to systems architecture, create new pipelines for deploying software and warehousing data, specify new data formats to simplify interoperations between platforms and successfully introduce these changes to all of our colleagues in technology.

Moving forward we intend to strongly favor serverless architectures, operate our systems on Amazon Web Services, provision our infrastructure with Terraform and author systems in Python and JavaScript.

As the leader of our Data and Delivery Engineering team you will...

  • Ensure that, in all tasks, every member of the Data and Delivery Engineering has the support, information, and insight necessary to contribute at their very highest level.
  • Provide clear and empathetic feedback and support to reports through regular code reviews, daily standups, weekly one-on-one meetings, and bi-annual performance reviews.
  • Work with Senior Management to create career paths and growth initiatives for your direct reports through goal-setting, mentorship, and coaching
  • Model success for your team by exhibiting a strong work ethic and fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
  • Establish strong, collaborative and productive relationships with direct reports, technical colleagues and stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Closely partner with your counterpart in our Product Organization to translate business needs into clearly defined technical tasks.
  • Help to establish company wide approaches to system architecture, software deployment and data formats.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teammates to plan, prototype, and execute ambitious projects on deadline.
  • Enjoy working with a wide-variety of new technologies

As The Manager of Data and Delivery Engineering you are:

  • Experienced leading technical projects: You have collaborated with technical and non-technical team members to break up large projects into ordered, discrete tasks and working to ensure successful execution.
  • A strong communicator: You can distill complex technical ideas for a diverse set of stakeholders from developers to editors, product managers, and executives. You can write clear and concise documentation.
  • A talented programmer: You have years of hands-on experience architecting, implementing, deploying and operating complex software systems in production environments. You are familiar with the major cloud providers and have extensive experience with at least one. You have worked with a variety of datastores and have in-depth knowledge of at least one database technology.
  • A critical thinker: You don’t need to be told how to get from point A to point B. Given high-level requirements, you can articulate the solution yourself. You relish an opportunity to architect new systems, services, or platforms from the ground up.
  • A dedicated learner: You keep up-to-date on major new offerings from various cloud providers, interesting new language frameworks, trends in software deployment, and any developments relevant to building quality systems.

As The Manager of Data and Delivery Engineering you have:

  • A growth mindset: Although you have a suite of proven technical and management tools, you remain open to new approaches and can judge when such approaches are appropriate to a given situation.
  • A team-first mentality: You have creative ideas about how to foster positive working relationships. You care deeply about the people you work with and are excited to facilitate the success and growth of everybody on your team.

Atlantic Media Values:

Across Atlantic Media, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in its candidates. In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions.

  • Force of Ideas: At the center of Atlantic Media work are the ideas within our writing. We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence. Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual honesty, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, giving voice, argument, and flight to the latter.
  • Spirit of Generosity: Atlantic Media seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct. Atlantic Media writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.
