Job Description

The Office Based Addiction Treatment (OBAT) team in the Section of General Internal Medicine at Boston Medical Center seeks a highly motivated individual to serve as a Research Project Manager. The Research Project Manager will support implementation of research studies and evaluation projects related to: BMC's nationally recognized OBAT Clinical Program located in Primary Care; OBAT’s Training and Technical Assistance Program, that provides addiction-related education in a variety of formats to health and social service providers across the state, with an emphasis on community health centers; OBAT’s various Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) clinics that provide tele-mentoring to community providers on a variety of addiction related topics.
This Research Project Manager will be part of the OBAT Program which sits within the Clinical Addiction Research and Education (CARE) Unit, an academic unit at BMC/ Boston University School of Medicine, part of the Grayken Center for Addiction, that conducts research, educates health professionals, provides health care, builds capacity and informs clinical and public health practice and policy to improve the lives of people who use alcohol and/or other drugs in unhealthy ways. The Research Project Manager will report directly to the Director of Special Projects and Research, as well as the Director of OBAT Clinic and State OBAT TTA Program, any study Principal Investigators, in addition to other senior leadership.
Major responsibilities include working with the OBAT and study teams to develop study and evaluation protocols, assessment instruments, and Institutional Review Board protocols; monitoring study implementation at all study sites; preparing and assisting development of manuscripts and presentations; and ensuring compliance with reporting to grant funding institutes.
The Research Project Manager will work closely with the Director of Research and Special Projects to monitor all activities related to research and evaluation to ensure activities are carried out in an ethical, efficient, and accurate manner . The Research Project Manager will be responsible for participating in the hiring, training and supervising of research support staff. The Project Manager may be asked to assist with data analysis and management as well as formative research (e.g., literature review, secondary data analysis).

The Research Project Manager will be responsible for working with the Director of Research and Special Projects to manage all research studies and evaluations taking place within the OBAT Clinic, by the OBAT team or the OBAT TTA team.

This will include:

  • Protocol design, implementation and tools required to satisfy a business or social goal or a scientific objective
  • Working with the OBAT research team to develop study protocols, assessment instruments
  • Acts as a liaison between OBAT team and other study teams looking to implement studies recruiting OBAT patients
  • Prepares and maintains Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals and correspondence, including amendments, and renewals as necessary
  • Monitoring study implementation at all study sites
  • Preparing and assisting with development of manuscripts and presentations, with possibility of authorship; and ensuring compliance with reporting to grant funding institute
  • Coordinate with any independent consultants and subcontractors
  • Oversee any research support staff including day to day oversight, supervising, mentoring, training, conducting performance reviews
  • Oversee and assist when necessary with patient recruitment, scheduling study visits, entering and updating patient data, and administer questionnaires as needed
  • Conducts literature searches
  • Assists Investigators with manuscript and presentation preparation and research.
  • Participates in staff meetings/initiatives including appropriate quality improvement and education activities, or if unable to attend non-mandatory activities, accepts responsibility to review meeting minutes and becomes knowledgeable of issues discussed
  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided
  • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the hospital’s goals and mission
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures
  • Performs other duties as needed

Requires Masters degree in related field (or equivalent combination of education and years of related experience); minimum of 3 years of full time research experience; 1 or more years managing or coordinating large scale research or public health programs; supervisory experience required

Other desired experience and skills:

  • Experience with research design, methodology, and analysis, is strongly preferred
  • Experience with research design and evaluation, manuscript preparation, and formative evaluation
  • Experience with recruiting subjects, with an understanding of the ethical and technical conduct of research.
  • Experience and comfort working independently with IRB to submit applications, reports, amendments, deviations, adverse events
  • Excellent interpersonal skills needed to work with human subjects and patients in a hospital setting.
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).
  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of social, racial and ethnic populations
  • Organizational ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently and to prioritize duties.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work both independently and in group setting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access and PowerPoint
  • Experience with statistical analysis tools a plus. Ability to perform basic data management tasks (coding, data entry, data cleaning, retrieval).
  • Ability to perform basic data analysis and reporting (in words, numbers and graphics)
  • Experience using quantitative data analysis software is helpful (e.g., SPSS, SAS)
  • Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information
  • Ability to mentor and supervise research support staff
