Senior Manager, US Indirect Tax

Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Manager, US Indirect Tax. The position requires a tax professional capable of leading multiple priorities in a dynamic, rapidly growing and fluid organization. You are highly organized, skilled at communicating to all levels of the organization, and a creative problem solver. You adapt quickly to change and will champion the advancement of processes surrounding US indirect tax compliance, process design, product integration, and internal controls that will improve the tax and overall finance functions at Etsy. You’ll lead the US indirect tax team and serve as the lead resource for these areas of the overall tax function. Initially, you will be responsible for the day-to-day work and, once your team is hired, you will provide guidance, direction, and mentorship to the team. You’ll work with other Finance teams, including Accounting and FP&A, as well as Product/Engineering teams and outside service providers. You will interface regularly with management and will play a key role in cross functional initiatives including making improvements to process as needed. You will report to the VP, Tax and Treasury. The role is located in our Brooklyn, NY office.

About the Role

• Own all aspects of US indirect tax: sales and use for Etsy, marketplace collection of sales tax on items sold on Etsy, and information reporting (e.g. 1099s) to the IRS and state taxing authorities.
• Coordinate and ensure timely and accurate compliance with all sales and use tax obligations while working to minimize liabilities.
• Identify and mitigate company risks and communicate areas of potential exposure to management. Work with the Director, Tax Accounting and Compliance on FAS 5 reserves.
• Research, analyze, and implement the impacts of sales and use tax law developments.
• Work with Product teams to implement any improvements to the Etsy platform which would facilitate compliance with any indirect tax areas.
• Maintain appropriate tax controls and policies for sales and use tax and US information reporting.
• Manage relationships with state sales and use tax auditors and coordinate interactions with outside advisors relating to sales and use tax and information reporting.
• Ensure the sales tax engine is up to date and that the items for sale on Etsy are appropriately mapped to sales tax categories.
• Maintain concurrent, audit-ready workpapers and financial records for all filings.
• Train purchasing and accounting personnel on sales and use tax along with training on relevant systems.
• Drive process improvements and implement technological solutions to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
• Hire, manage, develop, and mentor team members.

About You

• Minimum 7 years of experience covering the above essential duties and responsibilities in public accounting or in a combination of public accounting and corporate tax departments.
• BS Degree in Accounting (Masters of Accounting/Tax/JD a plus).
• CPA certification is a plus.
• Strong knowledge of tax law and FAS 5 accounting.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience as a strong, thoughtful manager with an interest in mentoring and leading team members to the next level in their careers.
• Willingness and ability to collaborate with international indirect tax and direct tax personnel as well as cross functional teams.
