Role Overview
This position is for a senior Structural Engineering professional with deep knowledge and highly developed technical expertise. Conducts analyses and inspection of products and processes. Formulates conceptual designs of products, processes and systems to meet customer requirements. Designs major components or major portions of a functional system and prototypes. Senior Structures Engineer to provide expert knowledge of strength, stability, fatigue and fracture analysis of detail designs of primary and secondary structural components using both classical and finite element-based analysis methods.

Primary Responsibilities:

Establishes structural specifications, conducts performance tests, and plans or conducts experimental, environmental, operational, or stress tests on models or prototypes of systems or equipment to ensure quality and performance standards are met.

Formulates conceptual design of products or systems to meet customer requirements.

Evaluates product data and design from inspections and reports for conformance to engineering principles, customer requirements, and quality standards to ensure compliance and product quality.

Applying scientific principles, designs major components or portions of a functional system, technically advanced prototype, specific or promotional product to ensure high quality and function.

Perform preliminary sizing and detailed analysis of structural components using classical and FE analysis methods in support of preliminary design and formal drawing release

Construct and analyze finite element structural models

Construct beam element models to generate internal loads

Perform design trade studies to optimize structural solution

Prepare detailed stress reports for customer and regulatory review as well as MRB support

Review drawings with other disciplines and provide structures input

Analyze structural repairs in support of MRB

Obtain geometry from 3D model based definition

Provide structures input to material selection and manufacturing processes

Responsible and accountable for all assigned stress tasks and completion dates

Ensure compliance with Collins Mechanical Systems engineering methodologies

Ensure compliance with ITAR export requirements

Experience

Strong background of strength, stability and fatigue analyses of metallic primary structural components using both computer modeling and classical hand analysis methods

Clear understanding of external loads, load paths and development of component and system free body diagrams

Strong understanding of aerospace materials

Good understanding of manufacturing processes

Proficient with using computing tools and programs including Windows OS, MS Office.

Prior experience with commercial FE based analysis package

Prior experience with 3D model based definition and 2D drawings

Prior use of PDM/PLM system

Preferred Experience

Prior experience with landing gear structural analysis

Prior experience with aircraft stress analysis

Prior experience writing certification stress reports

Proficiency with CATIA V5

Proficiency with ABAQUS CAE

Proficiency with SmarTeam PLM

Basic Qualifications
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline and 7 years of relevant experience or an Advanced degree in the appropriate discipline and 5 years of relevant experience.In the absence of a degree, 11 years of relevant experience is required.
