Job Summary

Centurylink is targeting candidates for a Field Technician II role in Elko, NV. This candidate will be based from their home and will be afforded training to learn the telecommunications aspects of the role.

This person will be equipped with all tools and equipment needed to perform the job; i.e. company vehicle; cell phone, computer and gas card.

We are seeking individuals with a basic electronics background, a basic understanding of DC Power Plants/Emergency Generators, and general outside plant construction knowledge/experience. This person must be adept with email, computers, and smart phone usage; and have a technical and/or mechanical background that would lend to the work involved with maintaining a fiber optic network.

The Field Technician II works mostly independently by performing tasks associated with the maintenance and growth of a Long-Haul Fiber optic network. Responsible for the outside plant fiber optic network and telecommunication sites in a given geographic boundary. Performs a wide spectrum of moderately complex assignments requiring alternative analysis, innovation and judgement, while demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills.

Job Description
  • Performs preventive/scheduled maintenance and inspections on equipment and on the critical infrastructure including but not limited to: HVAC systems, Generators, DC Power Plants including large cell batteries.
  • Basic understanding of maintenance & troubleshooting of emergency generators.
  • Monitors route and executes restoration in the event of a service interruption. Proactively responds to potential problem areas to ensure integrity of the network.
  • Basic understanding of maintenance & troubleshooting of building HVAC systems.
  • Basic understanding of maintenance & troubleshooting of DC power plants including battery plants.
  • Performs site surveys for new Transport Network growth and participate in electronic equipment installations.
  • Basic understanding of general outside plant excavation construction (conduit & pipe construction, grading & excavation construction, etc.)
  • Basic understanding of cable locating which includes monitoring construction work around the fiber optic cables for damage prevention.
  • Responsible for asset management: process deliveries and replenishes consumables. Coordinates shipping and receiving of materials. Operates and maintains tools, test sets and electronic equipment including, but not limited to: Fiber optic transmissions equipment, circuit termination equipment, fiber cable locating equipment DC power equipment, voltmeter and OTDR.
  • Basic understanding of fiber optic testing and compiling & submitting data to project management.
  • Complete work orders, trouble tickets and maintenance tickets efficiently to provide optimal metrics in On Time Performance (OTP). Mean Tim to Respond/Restore (MTTR), and maintenance activities.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities:

  • Technical and/or mechanical background that would relate to maintaining and growing a Long Haul Fiberoptic Network.
  • Must possess good personal computer & mobile phone operating skills and be well versed in Microsoft Windows and other Office applications.
  • Must possess the ability to quickly learn corporate systems & databases.
  • Must maintain site security and cleanliness.
  • A valid driver’s license required and satisfactory driving record
  • Maintain & drive company supplied vehicle.
  • Must demonstrate excellent troubleshooting and organization skills.
  • On-call 24x7 on a rotation basis on standby, call out, dispatch and overtime are required as dictated by the business.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Education Level: High School/GED
  • Experience: 2+ years of relevant job experience. Relevant job experience is described as job experience in similar industry or job experience with similar essential duties
  • Field of Study: Electronics or Telecommunications
  • Attention to detail with good organizational capabilities
  • Ability to prioritize with good time management skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Field Tech - Sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; lift 75 lbs.; works in all weather conditions
